Which fighters had the biggest weight jumps from one fight to the next? Ideally atleast 2 weight division jump examples please.
Off the top of my head, probably Roy Jones Jr. Sirimongkhon Iamthuam, from Thailand, is one of the most insane current weight jumpers I can think of. Maybe check his record?
Not in one fight, but Jimmy Ellis went from middle to heavy over four fights (as in middleweight, two fights at light heavy and his fourth fight in that span was a heavyweight) over a period of 16 months. I’d argue he’s the most successful weight climber in history, from good but not quite contender at 160 to a version of the heavyweight title.
If we had the weights for all of his fights, my belief is Sam Langford would be the King of Weight Jumps.
Armstrong jumped straight from officially FW (though realistically jr.LW) to challenge for the WW title, bypassing LW for the time being.
What do you mean by 'realistically ' junior lightweight? He weighed 124, same day weigh in and fought less than 8 hours later. Eleven or twelve fights later, he weighed 133.5 when he won the welterweight title, and, less than 90 days later he won the lightweight title and weighed 134. He defended the welterweight title 6 times while weighing 135 or less. His next defenses ranged from 135 to 141, fighting as a welterweight. He weighed 142 when he fought for the middleweight title.
You basically answered your own question. He was typically fighting several lb north of fw (what would today be considered jr.LW) over the year-&-a-half prior to beating Ross, except for 1 fight in the midst of that stretch where he dropped down to 124 to win the fw title. Although he was officially recognized as a fw throughout that run, he was more realistically a jrLW who sucked down for 1 fight.
Not know much of his accomplishments but surely Young Stribling need sto be up there right?? i think he competed in all of the traditional 8 divisions
Fat Willie Meehan might qualify. Jermell went from 154 to 168. Same for Crawford in a few weeks. And Davis is apparently jumping from 135 to cruiserweight.
My point was that, despite fighting from featherweight to challenging for the middleweight title, Armstrong's weight was consistent. He was barely a junior welter when he fought for the 160 title and he was a lightweight when he became welterweight champion.
James was always a natural cruiser to me, I’m not overly impressed by it. For example I could picture Gerald McCellan had he evolved winding up at 190lbs maybe even HW at some point in his career, similar to Eubank Snr who fought Carl Thompson.
