I don't think I've seen a thread on him. How good/bad was he, I only know that he was a nephew of Carmen Basilo's, and he got to be champion luckily due to a cut eye. Any info one him?

GoldenHulk, Boy did Billy Backus shock the world on Dec 3 1970, stopping the great Jose Mantequilla Napoles on cuts to claim the World Welterweight Title.

People say he was lucky vs Napoles but I don't agree. It was a savage short fight in the same vein of Hearns vs Hagler, the 3rd round is probably one of the most brutal even rounds you'll ever see.

Up until that point in the fight Backus was giving as good he got, and even without the cut the result was very much in doubt with no real clear indication who would've won.

Yes the cut was unfortunate but it's not like Napoles was dominating up until he got cut, Backus was giving Napoles hell and could've possibly won without the cut.
