You really think that? No way. I can't see Conn beating Ellis or Quarry in the WBA tourney.

People i think Conn gives hell to and possibly beats:

    Holmes
    Spinks
    Evander

The reason would be his speed, combos, and constant movement

People who i think beat him convincingly:

    Ali
    Frazier
    Norton
    Foreman
    Tyson
    Lewis

Well, it has started again somewhat over the last decades. Spinks, Toney and Jones comes to mind. I think this is because new training methods such as weight lifting (possibly coupled with steroids) has made it much easier to put on weight in sheer muscle.

That it's one take on it. I personally think that HWs becoming bigger has more to do with it, because the HW title has always been the big prize, both in money and prestige.

That's why LHWs started moving up again when new methods made it easier to put on a lot of muscle without losing too much speed and mobility (see above).

As a heavyweight he wouldn't amount to anything.

As a heavyweight Chuck Wepner managed to amount tho the No7 contender in the 70s, so an elite heavyweight from any other era should efortlesly break the top 10.

Very true. I've only seen Wepner against Ali, but he looked as bad as I've ever seen anyone look in a title fight.

The focus of this argument has largely been on the 70s. Personally i think that if Jimmy Young can beat Foreman, so can Conn. In fact, i doubt Foreman could have produced the same late knockout that Louis did to get out of jail, so IMO conn would have at least been a major player. Dont forget also that Ali seemed to have more problems with fast Boxing type fighters than with big hitting powerful sluggers, so dont be surprised if he gives Ali one hell of a fight also. But saying that i can see the argument against him succeeding.

but, The question also referred to the 80s and 90s era. Both eras where former light heavyweight champions bulked up and held the World Championship. In Moorers case, he wasnt even a real light heavyweight champion, so it isnt out of the question, even in the time of the so called giants. But what i find is more interesting, particularly in regards to the 90s, is what in the world evidence which even hints that a fighter who BEAT Joe Louis (over the 12 round limit) cannot do the same to other fighters like Holyfield, Moorer, OLD Foreman, Ancient Holmes, etc. With 12 round limits, he may quite possibly beat each and every one of those fighters. In any event, his chin held up to the power punching of arguably the best finisher ever, so it is unlikely that anyone from the 90s can crack it in this time.

This post definitely makes some sense. What I would say, though, is that Foreman would probably have KO'd Conn with the punch he just about KO'd Young with.

We are actaully talking about a 167 pound of Super Middle of todays' era. His prime fighting weight was 167 not the 175 that was allowed.
That was one hellish 4 punch combo that put him away.

Boxing isn't always about looking pretty.
