Its going to be a tough one this for Billy. Can't see him getting past that long jab of foster and if conn try s to make a fight of it foster will crack one over on him. But I see it going in to at least final rounds when foster finally catches him and put s him down.
Hard to know I may lean Foster. Question and I asked on another thread. Is the teocfights with Louis and the one fight with Bettina the only known in the ring footage of Conn?
Bob Foster lightning counters were legendary. One opponent was quoted as saying " fighting Bob Foster is like playing Russian roulette one mistake and your finished " Some of his left hook ko were frightening at LHW . A lanky 6'3 who could blow you away in close is a formidable opponent. Bob would counter with one of his big left hooks and Conn would be knocked out. I'm not sure about this one, did Bob Foster at Light Heavyweight fight anyone as good as Billy Conn? Dick Tiger you could say,a great Middleweight but let's face it at Light Heavy physically he was giving away a lot to Foster. Conn had a great defence, great speed and a great chin, this is no walk in the park for Bob Foster. Personally I think this is hard to call, if Billy Conn could out manoeuvre Joe Louis for 13 rounds, he can out point Bob Foster.
Tough one. For all Conn's silken skills Foster has an enormous reach advantage on him and a great snapping jab. He also has a massive power advantage. As half stated above he can take you out in close or from afar. I've got Foster on points in somewhat of a chess match, a game which Foster could certainly play.
Conn was no Mike Quarry...all they had in common was their Irishness, plus Billy was a decidedly superior boxer/fighter than Pierre Fourie....the guy who showed he had a beard and the skills that enabled him to survive 15 rounds twice with Bobby (Pierre called Foster "Bobby", and you know what happened)...and of course Conn damned near beat Joe Louis,...so, I'm saying that Conn decision Foster over 15. Conn was too fast, tough and smart...that is if he doesn't get "Irish-dumb" again like he did vs Louis.
So Pierre Fourie could go 15 twice with Foster, and Conn wouldn't have the basic wherewithal to avoid being ko'ed? Ridiculous!!
Very good match up. I see Conn building up a sizeable points lead, frustrating Foster all night long. I get an inkling, though, that Foster catches up with him and stopping him late on.
