Billy Conn versus Joe Calzaghe @ SMW

Calzaghe had a knack for doing what Kessler recognized as "ruining your boxing". He had a ****** wrench style that pivoted on a frenetic attack from every angle. I see Calzaghe as posing real problems for any SMW whose style was static or predictably technical. Conn was dynamic. He could slug it out or box and move, and I see that Irish temper flaring up when Calzaghe attempted to clown or "ruin his boxing". Conn would step on the gas and outpunch Calzaghe -not in output but in meaningful punching. Alot of Joe's opponents would be confused by Calzaghe's mode of attack and get insecure and tired -and Calzaghe just took over. Against Conn and some of his contemporaries? Different response.

A meaningless side note: Knowing Conn and the kind of man he was, I'd bet that Conn would dislke Joe's personality immensely. That would motivate Conn to go for the KO. Would he get it? Nah.

 

Conn handed southpaw Melio Bettina a boxing lesson in taking Bettina's LHW Title, easily dancing in and out. Calzaghe's southpaw stance would pose no particular difficulties for Conn as I see it.
