I like Conn big in the first scenario and Sugar big in the second. Which is interesting.

This is how I have it, but I can see scenario two making for a realy interesting fight because the younger Conn always seemed to throw the top fighters a bit of a curveball.

Conn wins this, and has a good chance of stopping Ray late. Ray was 31 for Maxim , he would not have skill advantages over Conn imo, neither would he be in his height bracket Conn has 2 inches on Ray. Conn was significantly better than Maxim , he threw fast combos and moved.
Maxim relied on his jab and was somewhat stationary. Conn had fast feet too ,as well as quick hands, he would not be appreciably out manouevered by a 31 years old Ray, who was able to capitalise on his fleetness against Maxim.

Billy had a top chin as well, he matches ,or runs Ray close in all departments, and he hit a bit harder than his ko % suggests, as Bob Pastor would attest.

    Billy for me!

D belief that Conn was better than Maxim is based on what ? on him getting KOd twice by d big and slow of both foot and mind man ? Maxim fought d best which resulted in some losses , Conn did not fight d best . I rank Maxim higher than Conn because he is far more proven than him . Compare their resumes it's not even close . Was Conn d only 1 2 cause Louis problems ? was it such a big deal 4 such a big man 2 cause Louis problems ? and they were just problems and he got KOd 2 out of 2 times .
Arnold Cream at least beat Louis 1 out of 2 times despite d judges took it from him . And Maxim outpointed Arnold Cream , Jimmy Bivins , Floyd Patterson and stopped WSJ . Not 2 mention other great fighters that he went d distance with .
Conn looked better than Maxim on average because he fought much smaller and lesser men than Maxim had on average .
As 4 WSJ , he could very well lose 2 a bigger man , where most if not all of his physical advantages would vanish , but he was just and big and better than some of d men Conn struggled against .

I wish we could have a beer and debate over this one, Matt:cheers Because in light of how much trouble SRR had against MWs I'm just not seeing how anyone can choose him "big" in any way over Conn at that weight. Even at Ray's peak he had major trouble with MWs (Mims, Abrams, etc) and didn't win big over them. So how does he win big over a top flight MW like Conn?

Beat him? Possibly. Beat him "big"? Ehhh....historical evidence wouldn't appear to support that conclusion.

He says that Maxim has a far superior resume to Conn, and says that Conn should be given no credit for giving Louis trouble as several people did, claiming that Louis was slow footed, slow fisted and stupid. He also notes that Maxim beat Jersey Joe Walcott, who he says beat Louis and stopped Ray Robinson. Ultimately he picks conn to beat the smaller man.

Conn in his prime...circa.1941...1st fight with Joe Louis would be too much for SSR at LH...

All correct except I don't think as far as Conn deserving no credit 4 what he did against Louis , but there should b no exaggeration in d significance of it either . He does deserve some credit 4 it , but ultimately he lost badly 2 out of 2 times .
And also i intentionally avoided d part about Louis being slow fisted . it never appeared in my post , nor anything that could b interpreted this way.

Conn would win a lopsided decision over the too small Robinson.
