Billy Conn vs Bernard Hopkins - 175 lbs

Years ago, after seeing a documentary on Louis-Conn, I came away more impressed by Conn than even Louis. my thoughts were, this guy nearly beat Joe Louis...what would he have to fear from any other lightheavyweight of history? No one..that's what I thought then and that's what I think now. Conn would beat Hopkins with room to spare over 15...he was both brilliant and fearless..with balls personified.

 

So, so true rc. Billy Conn with his Hollywood looks, was as tough as any fighter ever. By the time Billy was TWENTY ONE years old, Conn, WITHOUT an amateur bout was thrown in against a Fritzie Zivic, Babe Risko, Vince Dundee, Oscar Rankins, Teddy Yarosz, Young Corbett ,Solly Krieger,all champs [Rankins exception]from 10-15 round bouts...Without a bout in the amateurs, Billy Conn at 22 years old ,whipped the terrific MW Fred Apostoli,Tough southpaw champion Melio Bettina, [2],Gus Dorazio, Bob Pastor,Gus Lesnevich, Al McCoy, Gunnar Barlund, Lee Savold, and then at
the age of 24 years, Billy at 169 pounds gave possibly the greatest
exhibition of bravado against the 30 pound heavier great Brown Bomber...
Then Conn went into the service for 4 years, and was a slow shell of the young fiery lightheavyweight Billy Conn of 1941...Billy was one of a kind...

People really need to stop matching the old man with genuinely excellent or great light heavyweights.

 

Just for the record Hopkins at LHW would have 20lbs on the 167lb Conn and be much stronger. Hopkins at LHW is the same size/weight/strength as the LHW Conn

 

Conn in a dominant win

 

Somehow i don't think the tank like strength of ancient can only fight at his own pace, minimalist Hopkins is going to bother an active busy peak Dynamo like Conn too much, brus.

 

That's not the only advantage weight plays, for instance it makes it easier to parry/block, it makes your body punching more effective, it makes humping their leg while you headbutt them and hit their hip all the more effective too and so on and so on.

Effectively speaking though, you could throw a Peak MW Hopkins in with Conn at LHW and forget about Conn having any size advantages

 

Well it would be a much better fight than the old sneaky spoiler version anyway.

 

I've cultivated a genuine dislike of the hype for late career Hopkins over the years.

Not that some of it wasn't deserved and i can still be objective about him, but people really need to stop these vs prime excellent light heavy threads.

btw speaking of robbing, you ever seen that picture of Hopkins and friends running down the Philly streets after he beat tito(i think it was from then at least)?.Looks like the ****s just robbed a licquor store.:yep
