Well Williams is an ATG MW and Bivins also generally in most peoples top10 LHWs, no shame losing. Charles seemed to be far more dominant than these 2 against Burley though. I have a feeling the Zivic/Abrams/LEto losses may not have been just decisions, Abrams got a gift draw against Robinson from what I can gather, the Leto fight was an SD and I seem to remember something about the Zivic fight being controversal :huh

Anyway there was a reason Robinson, Lamotta amongst others avoided Burley, he was great and Charles dominated him giving him his worst career loss

Those Burley wins did not do charles any good. before he was drafted young charles was poorly matched and rushed into fights that he wasnt ready for -and this is the version of charles that should be picked against a more mature conn?

let me remind you this version of charles, having beat the smaller Burley was then wiped out by bivins and marshal in emphatic style. He was knocked down 15 times and took two bad beatings. The war came at the right time for kid charles, he got a rest from boxing and could come again when he had grown up.

Conn wasn't more mature last time he fought at 160 was as a 20yo, Charles left as a 21yo, Conn had more fights, Charles was more physically developed and already a force of nature

There is no shame in losing to Bivins and Marshall, they are both arguably better than anyone Conn beat, the 160lb version of Conn has plenty of losses of his own, to fighters worse than Bivins/Marshall. The Marshall loss was also a couple of months after the Bivins beating, coming back after a beating where he took 7 knock downs, the Marshall fight certainly wasn't at the right time for Charles. Charles also beat Maxim twice before these fights, he was already a great fighter albeit not the finished article

That's a pretty moot point given Charles beat Yarosz more emphatically than Conn who also lost to him and Moore/Marshall got better

Conn was never coming off a brutal beating like Charles, being thrown in with a great like Marshall 2 motnhs after being knocked down 7 times - I don't count that as a loss, he probably still had headaches going into that one

Both fighters were certainly thrown in the deep end

"I don't really care what scribes of the time thought when I can see the film and see the records with my own eyes.

Both of which you are obviously ignoring.

Charles fought at a much higher level, has far better wins, is far better technically, far better physically. I see no advantage for Conn here

You should have stopped at "I see no". That tells the whole story in a nutshell."

I have to apologize for this exchange. I just reread it and it reads smug and catty, which I try never to be. Not my style. I stand by my basic points, but rescind this and have deleted it from the original post.

Sorry PPuncher. We can debate like men:smoke

No problem my friend, it's all fun and games and we all love arguing about boxing, I think many of us come across more argumentitive than we truly are when our boxing passion heats up. I'm actually ignoring a lady I find very attractive to continue this argument
