Conn schools him from the opening bell. I don't see it being a contest, can anyone honestly see Calzaghe outboxing The Brown Bomber ?
We should take Conn because its only justifiable to do so at the weight. This is one helll of a fight.
Conn was an in and out type of fighter, and very good up close. However, I think Clazaghe was a better out fighter, and harder to match with hand speed, and rhythm. In addition, I think Calzaghe was a bit smarter in terms of tactics in the ring, and threw more punches. Since Conn was never a puncher, how in the heck does he win here? I think Clazaghe takes him via decision. Remember Clazhage is un-defeated. Conn lost a lot. Its time boxing fans and historians give Calzahge his due. He is one of the best fighters of his generation.
Why was Conn's KO% so low? It wasn't due to lack of skill or blows landed. In addition Conn used lighter gloves in his day. Conn gets a lot of millage for staggering Joe Louis, but I think this says more about Louis average ability to take it than it does about Conn's power.
Goto go for the better technical boxer in Conn, Joe just has too many defensive weaknesses that would be exploitable, and ancient versions of BHOPS and RJJ landed very clean boot shaking shots on him, so did Kessler and dross like Bika, Reid, Mitchell and Salem. Basically anyone who closes there eyes and throws a straight right tends to land Calzaghe's punches are quite wide and telegraphed and his punches are very weak, he has around 1 or 2 real KOs against total scrubs pre-title. Most of his title stoppages are early home town stoppages when a fighter was in no danger, some even throw and landed the last punch before being stopped. Having said all that Calzaghe's high pace and speed keep the fight close, around a 9-6 win to Conn
