So I've gotten real interested in Billy Douglas Busters father. I went to YouTube and couldnt find anything at all. How is this even possible considering some of the guys he fought
I've wanted to see the Saad fight for ages. It just looks to be completely gone. Although it was shown by ESPN, which means it could potentially be out there.
I remember reading about him in the magazines, but I never saw him on TV. Were any of his bouts televised? I wouldn't be surprised if the 1977 against Saad and Johnson were televised locally, but I don't know.
I've done quite a bit of reading on Douglas. He fought several good middleweight and light heavyweights throughout the 70s, and even had some good wins at some point. His fight with Bennie Briscoe is available on a Briscoe collection (which are easy to find), but evidently Douglas was over the hill and was dominated and stopped. I read his with Saad was filmed too, which makes sense since it was on the undercard of the Duran-Viruet title fight. I've often hunted for a long version of the Duran-Viruet fight to see if there were some clips of the Saad-Douglas fight at the end.
I've definitely seen one of his fights. Man, what one was it. It was against Briscoe. Maybe it was removed.
I could have sworn something of his was available at one time but I just wasnt interested then like I am now. Go figure
Don't ya hate that LOL It'll come back up. It was good viewing. Douglas is a fine fighter for someone that from memory failed to crack the Ring's 10. He must have been right on the fringe however. If it pops back up we'll do a thread on the fight.
I'm reading a book about the Tyson vs Douglas called the last great fight and it digs deep into Dynamite and I really find him really interesting and was hoping to find some of the fights they were describing in the book.
Douglas was a lot of fun to watch. He was all fighter. Against Saad he got the **** kicked out of him and then let fly with a left hook out of nowhere that sent Saad down literally face planting into the canvas. In typical Saad fashion he got up but took a hellacious beating before the round ended. Saad came back in the next round and both fighters traded drunkenly before Saad finally began to break through. The ref jumped in and stopped it in what could be considered a somewhat mild case of the hometown guy being protected because while Douglas was hurt he was no more hurt than Saad and the ref didnt stop it then. Very dramatic fight.
Probably. Douglas was exhausted and punch drunk. Saad had a hair more in the tank and his recuperative powers were legendary. My point is that if they were going to stop the fight when they did they could have easily stopped it a round earlier in which case Saad wouldnt have won. Douglas had guts Ill say that. There was zero quit in him and even beaten and exhausted the guy would be throwing hail marys. You gotta love guys like that.
I wasn't actually thinking about how the fight looked at the time, of course I couldn't since I wasn't alive back then. I was just thinking that because of Matt's chin combined with Douglas' age, plus that Matt had beaten fighters who were probably better than Douglas, including Marvin Johnson, who beat Douglas.
