    His manager didn't actually tell him about his father's death until immediately after the fight but Gibbons knew his father's condition when he went to the fight and when he saw a telegram handed to his manager toward the end of the fight he knew what it was about.

    According to this report, a uniformed messenger boy passed a note to Gibbons' manager during the 7th round.
    Gibbons guessed what it was about when his manager wouldn't tell him what it was about.
