Gamboa actually tried to win. Ricky was happy to lose a UD. The difference is huge. If Ricky had been willing to engage Crawford would have picked him off with ease.
Billy seems to get some stick on here. Ricky's move of trainers probably put Billy in the spotlight, but from what I can see Ricky has lost all his boxing ability. Grabbing, holding, telegraphing right hands, leaving his head in the air when targeting the body. His quality has gone! His fight on Saturday was boring! He should have also been deducted a point
I think its a disgrace for people to accuse Billy of wrecking Rickys career when he took him from being a guy who was falling short at British level to a 2 x world champion. Now that feet made Ricky world class, was he ever best SFW or LW in world, no he wasn't ever (that's were Billy was wrong in saying so, but hey guilty of backing his man that's all). Lets look at facts, and questions for Billy 1) As mentioned Billy took Ricky from failing at British level to world title wins 2) Ricky was super fit and conditioned, trained like a beast. Was that same near end of your partnership Billy? 3) Ricky clearly listened to Billy and followed his instructions but in later fights he would talk back In the corner. Was that the same in gym Billy? 4) Ricky got his jaw broke in a fight, if it was costing lasting physiological issues why did he not see a sports psychologist? 5) Ricky's form starting going down hill when he was due to become a dad, did that effect his hunger? 6) Ricky stopped using his strengths that got him 2 world titles, e.g stop using his reach, working behind a solid jab. Did you tell him to change away from this winning formula Billy, or did he do this in fights off his own back? 7) Did the hype/praise go to Rickys head Billy? The reasons I make these points is it appears that Billy is wrongly getting blame for everything that has went wrong with Billy, and for sake of his reputation and obviously without slagging Ricky off as I know he wouldn't I ask Billy to answer these questions, as its not his fault so why should he get blame.
Mate I don't need to answer any of the above questions, what I will say is I slept tight at night knowing I gave 100% not only to Ricky but every boxer I've trained! however you don't always get 100% back. Also people chatting in your ears doesn't help!!!!!
Point taking, I understand what would have went on their and I wouldn't repeat certain things I have heard as not my place ! But others should go through them questions themselves and piece it together, not rocket science. On other hand, do you think if Paul Smith vacates British and Callum Smith bypasses as it looks likely that Brophy is ready to challenge or it? I think he is, as stated on a thread I think he beats Buglioni just now what are your thoughts?
ive made a valid point on what i have seen since the beltran fight but you have done nothing wrong or have ever done anything wrong when you trained ricky. after a few more fights when it becomes clear that ricky will never mentally recover from the beltran fight just remember "i kept ricky in that fight and he kept hold of his title" but at the same time your big ego missed the obvious that you have ruined the career of the one fighter that truly believed in you and actually made billy nelson relevant in the world of boxing. you and ricky did wonderful things together and gave me some of my best nights out when i was there watching him during his world title reign but i just wish that you could have some humility and admit that you might have made a mistake.
i think that is something that his new coaching team should definitely look at. sometimes a boxer will not want to admit there is anything wrong but if he wants to carry on then that is a route they must consider. if billy had some humility he might have thought about using a sports psycologist during the build up instead of thinking everything was ok. there are so much things that can help fighters nowadays and if coaches would embrace them as others countries do. imo eddie hearn should also be talking to ricky about this too.
So you're training a world champion in a world title fight would you have pulled him out? In hindsight it's all fine and dandy to say "Ricky was hurt he shouldn't have fought on" put yourself in that corner of either being Ricky or Billy if you were Ricky would you want to be pulled out and lose your title? If you were Billy would you pull your guy out not knowing how serious it was and just give his title up? I don't think anyone would do that in a world title fight unless it was an obvious injury like with Ortiz.
no fighter wants to be pulled out but that is why the coach is there. there job is to not only get there fighter ready but to know when there fighters welfare is at risk. go rewatch the fight. ricky was in massive pain and i personally dont think he has recovered from that. if that was me i think the bond i would have with the fighter would let me know if he was really hurt and if it was time to pull him so he could come again without teh mental scars. at the end of the day no fight is worth losing your long term health for. ricky has a young family and they deserve the right to know that their loved one is being looked after properly everytime he steps through the ropes. not just ricky but every boxer in the planet should have a coach who knows when its best to make sure his fighter is looked after. to put it another way would you like to watch your son/daughter/brother/sister/mum or dad be involved in a world title fight where they are being beaten, its clear they injured and they are showing massive signs of being uncomfortable with the pain they are in and their coach just keeps telling them to fight through it? really think how you would feel about that before replying because i personally would rather have my loved one in with a coach that might think about more than just holding on to a title and more about my loved ones long term health. boxers have a long time to live after they retire and deserve a good quality of life when they do. only my opinion remember
jordan1989. to answer about hindsight that is why i asked billy earlier in the thread if he would do anything different if it happened in the future considering he has seen what it has possibly done to ricky and i havent had a proper answer from him on that. unless i have missed that answer.
