It's impossible to be an ATG with so many embarrassing losses. He got knocked out left and right his entire career. His only good win is a fluke win against Rockhold, the guy who choked him out with one hand when he took him seriously.
ATG status imo isn’t so much a certain numerical list as it is a pantheon for the exceptionally accomplished and H2H monsters of the sport. Context is everything, it wasn’t long ago that he was nothing more than an easy cherrypick for Rockhold, a guy Rockhold already easily beaten. He barely beat a 46 year old Hendo. In their primes he was on the receiving end of the most brutal knockout in the history of the sport. That was was an old and extremely deteriorated Silva that he “beat". Using a fairer scoring criteria and not the 10 point must from boxing clumsily ported to MMA, he loses that fight. ATGs don’t get battered by a weight drained shot2shite Wandy in their prime. Before the resurgence he was generally no more than an average contender, quite literally losing every other fight. It’s telling that he never was able to secure a title shot all those years when MW was by far the worst division in the UFC. Again I give him credit for his uncommon resilience and making the most out of his somewhat limited talent.
I’m neutral on Romero, off the top of my head I can’t think of am egregious thing he's done other than being misunderstood to be making a homophobic comment a couple years ago. Pissping has always been an arrogant, classless pos.
Bisping cheated in more fights than it is attributed to Romero. Bisping is notorious for low blows, illegal knees, grabbing the fence, deliberately spitting out his mouthpiece, I think he's no stranger to eye pokes as well. He spit on a cornerman after the fight once. He's just a scummy jealous pillow fisted gatekeeper who always hated on more successful fighters like Weidman, Hendo, Rockhold and Vitor. His obsession with Weidman was bordering on Malignaggi's obsession with Pacquiao. People somehow give him a pass because they think his character is a gimmick and he's just "promoting fights" when Bisping talks a lot of trash to people after fights as well. He's a dick and a bitter person. He also drinks alcohol. Basically a typical club fighter journeyman who got lucky with an undeserved title shot against cocky Rockhold (who had a knee injury coming into the fight). If he were in boxing he would never be anything more than a journeyman with that poor discipline and attitude.

Drunk Bisping, what an embarrassment for the sport. He's lucky UFC has such a shallow talent pool and even a guy like that can crawl to big fights. You'll never see a boxer like Andre Ward, Golovkin, Lomachenko or Joshua drinking and behaving like that: This content is protected
So he gets knocked out left right and centre, but when he knocks people out it's a fluke? Wanderlei was destroyed in under a minute, Couture was knocked out a good handful of times, Liddell was stopped 3 times in his prime. In MMA it's harder finding greats that haven't suffered KO losses than vise versa.
That's what makes MMA great though. In boxing one punch can change the fight, in MMA one single slip can change a fight. Suddenly a perennial contender becomes the MW champion of the world compiling one of the best MW resumes in history. If he beats Romero and say one or two other top contenders it's impossible to keep him out of ATG contention. Impossible. I mean beating a faded great, most do that. Knocking out a prime champ, few do that. Defended against his worst defeat was a cherry pick but one that paid off. He's now facing the legit best MW in the world. If he wins this and beats Whittaker next, he can probably cherry pick a defence against Belfort and still go down as an ATG.
- Deadbeat dad(excuses it as if it's no big deal) - Bizarre religious beliefs - Obviously juiced to the gills Just an insufferable guy period.
The thing is those ATGs at least had a prime, Bisping never had anything resembling a "prime". He was just consistently poor against every single decent fighter he fought and didn't belong in the same octagon with them. He is a perfect example of a high level gatekeeper, he's basically like Chisora of MMA 185 division. Someone who wins against people who he is supposed to beat but loses against people he is supposed to lose. A win 2 lose 1 kind of fighter, the two wins usually being against journeymen and the loss would come to a contender. When discussing ATGs we usually take H2H into account as well and take the best versions of fighters like prime Anderson Silva during the best years of his reign, prime (TRT) Vitor who beat Bisping, Rockhold and Hendo in a row in brutal fashion and prime Dan Henderson who was winning belts in Pride, or current prime versions of fighters like Yoel Romero who is 8-0 in the UFC and smashed everybody so far. Now what exactly is a "prime Bisping" that is even remotely on the level of those guys? There isn't any, even his only good win against Rockhold wasn't convincing at all as he was getting dominated prior to landing a counter. There was nothing that could make us believe that the version of Bisping from the Rockhold fight could hold his own against the prime versions of ATGs I mentioned before. He lost against old versions of true ATGs Hendo and Silva (and was only saved by blatant homecooking), he loses against prime versions of them 10 out of 10 times. He can't even beat prime versions of the likes of Chael Sonnen, and loses to the likes of (prime) Weidman, Mousasi and (prime) Jacare 10 out of 10 times as well. The only way Bisping is even remotely close to being an ATG is if a single division of a sport that is 20 years old somehow has 30 ATGs already.
Who is a deadbeat dad? Everyone in the UFC is obviously juiced to the gills, you can't compete at such level without being on gear. Romero is just a freak athlete on top of it and not a D-level athlete like Bisping who drinks. Also are we hating on Christian fighters now? What makes his beliefs more bizarre than that of any other Christian fighter?
If, if, if... Well if Jorge Masvidal beats Maia, Woodley, Conor McGregor, GSP, Wonderboy, Whittaker, Mousasi and Jon Jones in a row then he is an ATG as well. Sounds about as likely as Bisping beating all those fighters you mentioned. If he would be an ATG he wouldn't need to duck every fighter with a pulse. Bisping is not even interested in building a legacy, he clearly indicated he will retire soon.
Not really.. It's just chance. There were definitely occasions where he would be more than deserving of a shot. His momentum was killed on a couple of occasions by running into a bad style matchup (W. Silva, Hendo, Belfort) But with his tight striking, incredible cardio and stellar takedown defense he would have been a nightmare for the likes of Okami, Maia and Marquardt had he been given any of those fights instead of Wanderlei, Hendo or Belfort. He was also robbed against Sonnen who was clearly #2 in the division and fresh off nearly beating Anderson Silva. Had he gotten a nod there he would have been given a shot at Silva. Wanderlei wasn't shot... He was still game, and the old adage "styles make fights" rings true in this. A wild brawler with heavy hands with Wanderlei is just a terrible style for Bisping, whereas someone like Sonnen is much easier despite having been ranked much higher than Silva. Bisping is certainly an ATG MW... No question. On longevity, consistency and winning the belt alone.
