Just a request for people to remember the fighters who have lost their lives or been injured in the ring.... It must be so hard for them and their families.

I've not heard much about Gilbert Eastman for a while but just been watching a couple of clips of Benny Paret, Johnny Owens and Gerals Mclellon... made me real sad.

Please if you pray say a little one tonight for all the fighters we've lost, they don't get remembered to often and I think thats a real shame, Testimonials aside one day when we ALL remember ALL of them would be a big improvement on the odd tabloid story every time a new boxer joins the list.

    :good

Johannesburg - The South African boxing world was mourning the tragic death of one of its young talents Monday, who died after a severe beating at the weekend in a junior flyweight title clash in Eastern Cape province, South Africa's SAPA news agency reported.
Samorha Msophi, 22, was knocked down in the first round but got back to his feet to go three more rounds against title-holder Mfundo Gwayana in an arena in East London.
After what described in local newspapers as a merciless pummeling by Gwayana he fell again in the fourth round, slumping onto the canvas and slipping into unconsciousness.
He was rushed to hospital and put on a ventilator to help him breathe. The fight had also left him without the faculties of sight and speech and doctors lost the fight for his life early Monday.
The local Daily Dispatch paper reported that spectators had been calling for the referee to stop the fight as Msophi tottered around the ring, trying to par a flurry of blows.
The two boxers were from the same sprawling Mdantsane township near East London and had reportedly been trading verbal blows for weeks in the run-up to the challenge.
Boxing South Africa (BSA) director of operations Loyiso Mtya, expressing his condolences, said no-one was to blame for Msophi's death. 'Everybody is a genius in hindsight,' he said, responding to criticism of the referee.
Mtya told the Dispatch that BSA was introducing measures to protect fighters that would, among other things, allow the association to penalize handlers who ignored the dangers for their boxers during grossly mismatched bouts. this one brought a tear to my eye,he said he was just fighting to better his families life.
so im with you jeff m8,very sad!!

    Johnny Owen...........The Match Stick Man.

    Eddie Thomas trained him.

and then later on of course Colin Jones.

Johnny died around 1980 in the ring.........only a young man in his 20's

    Sad..........his parents were heartbroken.

James Murray is another one that comes to mind.

He collapsed in the ring when the ref stops the fight.

And you could see a woman ringside........I think his mother........going frantic.

She knew immediaelty through instinct that something was seriously wrong

I remember that growing up, it happened the same night as the Minter-Hagler kick-off. Every night on the news there was an update on Johnnys condition, he seemed to be getting better towards the end but relapsed.

jim murray from newmains in scotland, just up the road from me, sadly missed, a statue of jim stands proudly at newmains cross.

lets not forget his opponent drew docherty, who has to deal with the knowledge he was the other man in the ring that night.

to everyone involved in these sad rarity's we shall spare a thought and pray for them and there families
