Jacob Volkman recently caught up with AboveAndBeyondMMA.com and declared he is bitter about the UFC, and plans to expose them to the fans. Ed Kapp: How did your introduction to MMA evolve into what it is today? Jakob Volkmann: Well, I didnt realize there was that much politics in martial arts, especially in the UFC. That was kind of frustrating. Its not who is the best; its more of a political kind of BS. EK: What do you mean by that? JV: Youve got to know the right person, have the right manager in there. And your style determines if you stay in, too. The guys that stand and bang are the ones who are still fighting for the UFC. The ones that take the fights to the ground and focus more on the technique on the ground, theyre not in there because apparently the fans dont like that. That really bothers me because the UFC made the interest of the sport more of a stand-up fight because thats what they put on the main card and thats what the fans saw. They started liking that more than the ground game. Thats what really bothers me. EK: Why were you released? JV: I was released after a loss against Bobby Green, which I shouldve never lost. It was kind of a fluke loss, going into the fight sick. I lost and then after that, they cut me. I was 6-2 at lightweight and they still cut me. That was back in February. EK: Were you expecting to be released? JV: No, no. I said in a few interviews that I did expect it, but I was just playing with the media. I had no idea. EK: Are you at all bitter about how things worked out with the UFC? JV: Very bitter. They always claim that they treat the fighters so well. Yeah, they treat the top five per cent of the fighters well the ones that are on the main card all the time. This content is protected the catastrophic-injury insurance is not even really good insurance. Theres no retirement fund, theres no signing bonus. You start off at six-and-six, youre really not making too much money because youre self-employed, This content is protected They claim theyre treating the fighters well, but theyre not, realistically. EK: Do you feel thats a misconception among fans? JV: This content is protected EK: At the end of the day, what are you hoping to accomplish with the World Series of Fighting? JV: This content is protected But also my goal is to win in World Series and try to stay undefeated. Obviously its to win. The short-term goal is to win. The long-term goal is, as soon as they come out with that belt, Id like to get that belt. 'Bitter' Volkmann plans to 'expose' the UFC - Mixed Martial Arts News
The guy is a nobody fighter, he's supposedly doing what he loves, and he's making a living wage doing it, can't expect much more than that.
Yeah that's just dumb to say. But I agree that many fighters are underpaid. i know that some aren't the greatest fighters but how can they really concentrate on their careers if they lose money by fighting in the UFC because of taxes and trainers and everything. There should be a higher minimum pay in the UFC at least for fighters with 3 or more fights
MMA spent a very long time thriving on fighters who loved fighting or loved martial arts. Now that MMA is hitting the big time with UFC on Fox and Bellator on Spike, fighters are rightly not tolerating being taken for a ride when it comes to their window of opportunity and how much money they make.
Especially in the USA they should not ***** about the fighters pay. The fighters chose that profession. They can claim they chose it for love, money, fame what ever but they chose that path. These ***lords think they should get paid just for being a fighter. They dont realise there is very little demand for fighters like Volkmann and ***** about it when they get paid accordingly. Anderson Silva makes money cause he is exciting and people want to see him in the ring. Volkmann dont get paid Anderson Silva money cause he puts so much less asses in those seats. With his fighting style he might make few asses vanish from those seats and this costs money for the company he works for.
Too many people give it the 'fighting is a hard job they should be paid more' or 'look at what Floyd is getting paid' atsch Don't like it, get a supposedly easier job that pays the same. Oh, you won't get one.
that is after taxes, he still has to pay managers, coaches and training partners. So probably half that. And yes that is poverty level.
SO the UFC claims to be NFL, NBA , MLB level, well all those leagues have a minimum and it's well over 100,000 dollars for bench riders. Volkmann took punches to the face just like Anderson Silva.
The thing with professional athletes is that they haven't got a long career and have to pay A TOn for managers, trainers, all kind of coaches and a lot more. If it was a normal job that you can have until you're 60-70 I would agree but athletes have it hard sometimes. Fighters liek Diaz shouldn't ***** about the money they get paid but there are some fighters who have real problems
Then he shouldn't have had three kids. Sorry, but I've got no sympathy for a self-avowed conservative who turns around and complains about the card that the free market has dealt him. There's zero demand for to see a fighter with Volkmann's style, and he's incapable of selling himself to the fans. He's lucky that he made any money in MMA at all. Most guys in the fight game earn a small fraction of what he did in the UFC.
