The long count incident was a bit bizarre. Gomez hit Zarate while he was on the floor and did not get dq'd. Duran quitting Randall Cobb dropping Howard Cossell's toupee Larry Holmes and Renaldo Snipes boxing an extra round after their fight had been stopped. More recently, the guy who quit without a punch even being thrown, to protest his purse I think.
I came across one today that I’d never read or heard about. Roberto Duran defending his lightweight title in1977 in Miami vs. Vilomar Fernandez. Fight is at the Fountainbleu Hotel. Ring is set up on the tennis courts with seating limited to 1,200. OK, interesting location, but so what? When the fighters get to the ring, the ring announcer asks the crowd to stand and face the flag for the national anthem. Only there’s no flag. And no one to sing the national anthem. Not even a recording. Enter Jerry Quarry, on hand to do TV commentary, to save the day. He climbs into the ring and sings the Star Spangled Banner (and as is noted, gets all the words right). Then exits the ring to do commentary. Nobody had that on their bingo card for sure. https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Roberto_Duran_vs._Vilomar_Fernandez
