SUBRIEL MATIAS vs JEREMIAS PONCE What happened? It went from being called a potential "fight of the year" into a sudden and mysterious stoppage TKO in between rounds... Both fighters were clearly still able to continue! It's silly to end a fight because a fighter is "taking too many shots". It's boxing! That's what happens! Besides, both were landing and taking an almost even number of blows. This fight was for a title too. That really stinks
I think he gassed out, and was still hurt prior to starting the round. I feel it was only a matter of time before he was stopped.
Nothing bizarre about it whatsoever, if your son was being battered senseless by a guy with a death on his record, you'd pull him out too.
It would serve people well to take a step back and try to appreciate just how dangerous this sport can be, and is soaking up potentially life altering punishment in an unwinnable match because of some silly prideful notion of saying you went the distance, really worth paying the ultimate price? Yeah this is an important consideration, and I suspect it was part of some of his other stoppage wins.
Ponce could have done better had he tried to keep his distance and jab more. Matias still would have gotten the better of him and manhandled him in the later rounds, Matias was simply the stronger of the two, but the gung-ho strategy expedited the matter which left him completely gassed, prompting his corner to stop the fight, which was the right call. Matias is basically the Beterbiev of 140 pounds and can't have your guy getting senselessly beaten in there.
This forum doesn't need any more conspiracy theorists. There was nothing mysterious about the stoppage. Ponce was gassed out and getting hurt. Now he lives to fight another day.
