BJ Flores will face Jose Luis Herrera two weeks from now on the Roy Jones Jr. promoted fightcard. Flores is a legit top 10 Cruiserweight who beat Darnell Wilson (22-5-2) last year on ESPN. Herrera has wins over Jorge Castro (129-10-3), George Blades (21-3), and the highly touted Aaron Williams (17-0-1), all stoppage victories. In his last 3 fights, Herrera went 2-1, stopping both Blades and Williams, before being TKOed against the respected Enad Licina. Herrera did manage to floor Licina in the first round. Personally, I see this as the fight of the night on March 21st.
Ugh. I can't see this looking any different from Flores-Wilson. For Flores to earn my respect, he'll need to man up and not run from a puncher the entire night. I've seen 4 of his fights now, and he's impressed me in none of them.
Interesting. Why would he stand and trade with a puncher though, if he has the skills to rack up points wins? As Lennox once said, "That would be foolishness". I look at Flores this way. How many fighters at Cruiser can box off the backfoot, like Flores can? Cunningham, Alexeev, Adamek at a stretch. There are very few skilled counterpunchers who are among the division's elite. Can you see Ramirez, Frag, Wlod, or Huck sticking and moving like Flores? Because I can't.
I can see Brickhaus' point. There were quite a few stretches during Wilson-Flores where he turned and hightailed it around the ring. While I respect his ability to control distance and all that, Watchability needs to be taken into account by some fighters. Unless you're an over the top hardcore purist, seeing a guy run (and believe me Flores did RUN at some points against Wilson) isn't very watchable nor is it entertaining. The point is to hit and not be hit (and Flores is great at that) but at the same time, you need to be entertaining as well.
Christ, I can't believe RJJ's next and hopefully last fight is already upon us. Haven't heard zilch about this card lately. A real crapfest if you ask me.
Of course those guys can't, that's not their style, but it's not like Flores is that great at it either. Despite running half the fight, Flores, STILL almost lost on points to Wilson, who's been blown out on points by guys like Felix Cora and Vadim Tokarev. If he tries pulling that against a slightly better boxer, the decision probably comes out the other way. I'm not sure I'd count Flores as "among the division's elite" until he proves that he can take a punch and that he's a little more versatile than what he's shown recently. I've seen other fights where he's the aggressor, and he looked like a supersized version of Peter Manfredo. Head to head, I think he'd have trouble with 3 or 4 guys who fought in the most recent Contender tournament.
Good opponent for Flores. If he wins this, he will have Wilson (top 10), Nwamu (beat Hino by wide UD), Walker (strong heavyweight), and Herrera on his resume, which is pretty good IMHO
The thing you need to remember is that ding was top 10 at the time he fought Bj. He was on a scary hotstreak and Flores ended it for him. And the fight was NOT close, Flores won by 6 rounds on the judges cards. Teddy Atlas card was a joke! I think ding just stopped training hard after that, he was so de-motivated. He doesnt even post on esb anymore, maybe his love for boxing died somewhere along the way
I'll bet you a thousand dollars that not a single judge had Flores winning by 6 rounds. Before you make crazy claims, try googling it first, or something. I personally had it a draw (and the decision was booed by the crowd when it was announced), but the fact of the matter is that Wilson has never outboxed someone in his life. If Flores was so great at fighting off the back foot, he should have been able to dominate, like Felix Cora did.
Yep, they did. I had Flores by 1 round but draw is good too. Official scorecards: 115-113 | judge: Joseph Pasquale 116-112 | judge: George Hill 118-110 ~ All for Flores.
This is not an easy fight for Flores. Herrera can bang at light heavy and at Cruiser, he's the one of the only people to knock out Castro and he stopped Williams who is a natural Cruiserweight. He couldn't hurt Tavoris Cloud though but we'll see if he put some hurt on Flores.
I agree, good fight. Herrera has been fighting solid opposition for the last year and a half, whereas Flores has less than 3 rounds of boxing in over 13 months. I expect both guys will be trying to make a statement, but Flores should come out on top.
