Move to Brazil BJ, live with André Pederneiras and train with the Nova Uniao team, back to your roots. You can't outbox everybody, and when it's not working you need to stop trying. Frankie Edgar, excellent job, did everything you possibly could.
the bar was crowded so i couldnt see properly but is it just me or Penn cant pull the trigger anymore? Thats not the Penn you are used to seeing.
Agreed Penn looked so one dimensional tonight it was hard to watch. Gutted watching it wtf happened to BJ. The only time i thought he had a chance was that brief second of taking Edgars back which was reversed very quickly
Good post Beebs. I got that feeling watching BJ tonight on the ground that I did when Koscheck was outwrestled by GSP the 1st time and it made me thing do these guys just go half ass or train very little time on the grappling because they believe they are that good its like a light switch just turn it on and off ? So yeah I wanna see BJ get back to his BJJ roots listen he is a good boxer but as proved he cant outbox everyone. BJ was tired yet still got 2 takedowns you couldnt help but wonder what happens if he focuses 100 percent hard on BJJ training agian or if that was round 1 or 2 ?
It's a new era. BJ is generally a boxer and BJJ. Frankie was just too dynamic for him. Props to Frankie for showing in yet another fight that he could improve more.
Funny thing, when BJ jabbed, he landed. He tried to counter with hooks, but all he needed to do to win the standup was utilize his reach and mix in some leg kicks. He was too busy trying to counter what Edgar was doing, when he should have been the one forcing Edgar to make mistakes. Simplest of tools, the jab would have worked as the platform to set everything else up against Edgar.. I think the first tall fighter who does this will **** his world up. Edgar's standup looks pretty silly to me. Not going to matter anyhow, he will lose to Maynard in his next fight.
I thought Penn won the first fight, but he did not dominate Edgar. Edgar dominated Penn in the rematch. As Edgar's confidence grew and Penn stood there with his chin in the air, I thought we were on our way to seeing a stoppage. I believe the only way Penn can defeat Edgar is to establish his jab. Penn will also have to do something he rarely does, and use leg kicks to slow Edgar down. Penn is never going to be in better condition than Edgar, so he has to find a way to soften him up. After two or 3 rounds of that, he should try to take Edgar down and establish top control. Penn had a beaten look on his face last night. I'm curious to see how much desire he has left at this point. If that was the end for Penn, I've enjoyed watching the career of one the best to ever compete in this sport. If he presses on, I'll be rooting for him. He remains one of my favorites.
I hope BJ either retires or does something drastic, like the TS is suggesting, because Saturday night was just demoralizing. Frankie Edgar is a decent all-rounder, but nothing more. He doesn't come close to BJ's ability. I fully expect Maynard to beat him clearly again. I'd love to see BJ become a BJJ fighter who uses striking as a way in. His takedowns, his takedown defence, his top game, all are world-class. Frankie Edgar is too quick and too determined to get outboxed, it would take someone with serious speed and power to beat him in a stand-up war, a real Muay Thai expert. I think BJ is one of the greatest of all-time, and I hope he learns from this defeat and comes back stronger, but if he does retire then I think he has done enough to leave a fantastic legacy.
:thumbsup I didnt see anything in his stand up that made me think he has great hands. What Edgar does possess though is very good speed. He was able to get in and out alot faster than BJ could react. BJ's main problem though is he wilts mentally. Instead of ad******g he just plods forwards hoping to land one instead of shooting and using he's ground game. That said Edgar tooled him and was better in every department. Iv never seen BJ taken to the mat that easily and that consistently.
