a long time ago!!! One of the best things he can do for his career! I'm very excited to see the results. We all saw them in the 1st 2 rounds with Fitch. Condit has a heavy task in front of him if he is going to beat BJ now. :deal
Not sure if you're trolling or not... If not, what is it that you think Hughes can teach Penn exactly?
A) Work Ethic B) Getting used to rolling with a grappler who has such a strong wrestling base, also who is as physically strong as Hughes. The more time he spends with Hughes on top of him, the better his cardio will hold up in a fight with a bigger wrestler on top of him. I'm not sure if you are trolling or not. These are obvious things. Do you think there is nothing Hughes can help him with? How do you explain why BJ Penn would waste his time then? Why would BJ contact Hughes before the Fitch fight and ask him to help him train then? :huh
So hanging around a guy who has (or at least at one time had) a strong work ethic will suddenly mean that Penn does? Work ethic transmits by osmosis? And him training with good wrestlers (not necessarily Hughes, but good wrestlers) would be a good idea for someone fighting Fitch or Kos or GSP, and I'm sure that Penn did work with good wrestlers when he was fighting them. For Condit though, I don't see how that addresses anything in particular that he's doing to deal with. It's not like Condit is some giant wrestler that's going to try to take down Penn and hold him down. As for the question "If it's not helpful then why would Penn waste his time" implies that whatever Penn does in his training, it must be right. Based on lots of his previous performances (and the excuses of his fanboys) that's clearly not the case.
Training with an ATG former champion is obviously a good idea and requires no explanation. I mean, seriously?
So you think he'll be much more prepared for Condit now that he's training with Hughes? Training with Matt Hughes is the key to beating Carlos Condit? Because they have exactly the same style?
No, Condit and Hughes do not have the same style. You are right that in THAT way it does not make sense to train with Hughes. The question to ask isn't is Hughes the same as Condit. The question to ask is can training with Hughes improve Penn to a level where he has a greater advantage over Condit and the answer is clearly yes. Training with Hughes can clearly improve BJs wrestling ability which could absolutely be a factor in this fight. Condit isn't known for having the best takedown defense, but BJ isn't know for his great takedowns eaither. BJ can, of course, finish fights with his great top game better than he can from the bottom. Therefore training with Hughes is a good idea. It is good to bring in people that can emulate your opponent but it is also good to train with guys that will test your conditioning and improve specific aspects of your game so that you are better able to beat your opponent.
Of course its a great idea. Hughes can possibly develop BJ's takedown game get him use to being manhandled again by a big wrestler. That is, if he's going to take a run at the title.
Osmosis? You are coming off pretty damn ignorant here dude. If BJ trains in Hawaii he is in charge. If he goes to hickville USA and trains with Hughes and the country boys, he will feel much more pressure NOT to slack off in training. He is surrounded by guys now that have better conditioning then him, have a history of training harder than him and won't be afraid to give him **** if he pusses out on training. So it WILL help his conditioning without a doubt. The reasons why it will help his grappling, specifically wrestling, from training with Hughes is so clear only an idiot wouldn't understand it. As far as Hughes not being the same style as condit, who gives a ****. He is doing it to improve 2 aspects of his game, conditioning and wrestling, both of which will help him in a fight against anybody! When GSP trained with his boxing coach for his fight against Shields, was he wasting his time because the boxers he sparred had a different style than Shields? Don't answer that atsch
Yeah, coz your trainer needs to have exactly the same fighting style as your opponent otherwise you get stomped. It's lucky for Manny Pacquiao that 50 year old Parkinsons sufferer Freddie Roach has the exact same fighting style as Miguel Cotto, otherwise he'd have got ****ed up.
BJ is a talent but at 170 he will just take it easier. He will always be great but he'll have huge disadvantages in size and stamina versus Condit.
