BJJ is now being relegated to the 3rd or even 4th best discipline.

Hector is an animal, I believe he has a black belt in judo, and I think ,though not certain that he holds a blacl belt in BJJ. Also very powerful hands standing up and violent ground and pound, have no idea why he isn't in the UFC!

I think the days of just having BJJ are behind us, but it is still a must to train, even if you don't use submissions it doesn't hurt to know the escapes!

    good post:good

everyone has some submissions in their toolbox now. even if they are a striker or wrestler.

the fedor loss and the anderson silva win are the biggest points for me. without strong submission talents it would have been a different outcome in both these fights for sure.

I see slight changes in the sport as well, but mostly is an slightly improved defense from the fighters and more well roundedness of their skillset.

If mma ever becomes a battle of just positional control and hanging on to those "dominate positions" for points if that completely takes over the sport of mma it will eventually lose the majority of its fans.

the threat of submission and the possibility of a ko are what holds the suspense in MMA that can not be lost, and fortunately it will never be.

I have listened to wrestling is king crap for so long now it is complete horse****! chael sonnen is a fantastic wrestler even if he beats anderson in a rematch what happens when he runs into a fighter like damian mia again?

    sonnen will quickly be submitted.

Good post. I don't know about Sonnen definetely losing to Maia - both have had their off moments.

It already happened at ufc 95 and it was pretty one sided.

it is possible that sonnen could employ a different gameplan, but if he tries to wrestle maia I would say its just a matter of time that he gets subbed.

ps Pira, I too am a fan of JWP, look forward to his match with yod. I think he has a fight before that though.

Wrestling + BJJ are usually the best combination nowadays.

i just think you are seeing MMA evolve, and more people having a range of skills, not just skills in one area

also, and this is what i don't like, is that the newer guys aren't training a style or discipline, but training specifically to survive in an MMA match (lay and pray)

add to that the rules don't really allow a BJJ practitioner to pull guard and wait for an opening, since there are rounds now (unlike the early days of UFC)

Sorry i was talking about if Sonnen - Maia met again.

JWP match should be great - have judged four of his fights and should be the fifth.

The undercard is great as well.

Let's not forget about the top game, when people think BJJ they think gaurd which is understandable, but even wrestlers fighting on top employ jiu jitsu whenever they pass guard. I can't take anything away from wrestling though, in fact I want to wrestle myself once a week to compliment my BJJ, the benefits of wrestlers takedowns and top control are HUGE and in my opinion BJJ and wrestling are both at their best when they go hand in hand.

It's true. BJJ is the number one most important thing in MMA. It seems like it isn't only because every single UFC fighter trains it, or at the very least a defensive version of it.

When the single worst BJJ fighter in the UFC gets taken down what does he try to do? Get guard. That's ju jitsu.

    It depends.

Boxers don't prepare for other martial artists, other martial artists generally do prepare for how to neutralise punches, kicks etc. If boxers start entering MMA then they will pick up things to help them implement their core style resulting in KOs. One day, boxing may be a dominant style all by itself ala Chuck Liddell and JDS.

In the beginning BJJ ruled because no one had a clue what to do. Now all these wrestlers know what BJJ will do but enforce their strength, control and positioning. You got guys like Rashad who are good at BJJ but use it defensively rather than offensively.

With Silva the best 185 and Shogun the best 205 then maybe Muay Thai will rule for a bit.

BJJ needs to evolve as guys aren't as threatening off their back. Skills need to be developed that sees the guard as more dangerous and guys need to learn to strike off their back to win rounds.

It's all just a phase and it all comes down to versatility and execution. Always has done and always will do.

I agree. All they concentrate on is stand up grappling and throws. It is very effective in MMA. Karo and Akiyama have shown us some sick moves. More fighters need to embrace it and for years I've counted it as one of the 5 most effective martial arts.

I agree. I watched Maia vs Miranda today and he was nullified despite non stop submission attempts. Take away his BJJ and he becomes a very average striker.
