Buchanan's upper body movement was all his own. He had a very consistent and functional jab, but could be relied to trade on his iron chin and engage in some very technical exchanges. He fought in a brilliant era for lightweights, facing some of the greatest that weight has ever had to offer, including a red hot youngster called Roberto Duran and n ATG on his last legs in Carlos Ortiz.

The wins over the aforementioned Laguna (a brilliant operator in his own right) are brilliant, and Hernandez was faded but still a dangerous puncher.

Until right at the very end of his career, Buchanan had lost to 3 guys; Velasquez (possibly controversial) for the European title, and the Spaniard would years later earn a hollow paper championship at Light Welter, Duran, arguably the greatest fighter that has ever lived (in controversial circumstances but, let's not gloss over it, he was well beaten) and Guts, also a top Lightweight, and away from home in Japan! Rest of his losses were well past prime.

Buchanan was stopped once, by a punch to the bollocks by the most ferocious man to ever step between the ropes. He was ****ing class, an his run in between losing the Euro title and losing to Duran is one of the better ones by any British fighter IMO.

Buchanan is a fantastic fighter to watch, was one of the first guys that really caught my eye when I started getting into watching boxing for something more than a fight. I thought '**** me he's from Scotland?!?! Didn't realise we were that good'.
