Ted 'Kid' Lewis was the very definition of 'pound-for-pound', engaging in bouts from Welterweight, where he was THE WORLD CHAMPION and embarked on an epic series with an ATG set in stone, Jack Britton, all the way to small Heavyweights. He faced one of THE greats, lightweight champ' Benny Leonard in what is usually accepted to be a draw. Class operators such as Mike O'Dowd and Tommy Gibbons appear on his ring record as well.

Lewis fought regularly was a hard and mauling pressure fighter from what I know of him, although he was capable of cutting distance with clubbing counters. I've never seen the footage right at the bottom before, but it looks like Welterweights (spurious claim I know) however I don't know who the opponent is (maybe Basham at middle? Which is out there), I imagine it's essential viewing nonetheless.

Against a fellow weight riser, Light Heavyweight champ' and future Heavyweight title challenger Georges Carpentier.

Against a much bigger guy in Tom Gummer. 'Kid' Lewis batters him and stops him in a round, although, be it due to incomplete records or not, size is pretty much the seemingly poor Gummer has on Lewis.

Against God knows. Shows pretty crafty, if still wildly aggressive work from Lewis here.

He was stopped only four times....in 299 bouts :-( Unbelievable. Off the top of my head he kept his title in four or five 'no decision' bouts before Britton finally reclaimed it off of him. One world title. 8 divisons, and Lewis was the main man for over a year, and fought about 40 times or summat that year I think

 

Obviously I don't know all the intracacies of Lewis' resume, there's a lot there and he's a guy I've done some, but not as much research as others. Have only a few primary sources of his fights with Britton, but reports of a few more, and a couple of his fights with O'Dowd.

Quality fighter.

Sean, again, great choice mate, defence wasn't Randy's strongest suit but he was a skilled and brave, and had a fair dig on him from all the footage I've seen if him.

Going 1-1 with Robbo is enough praise in itself. Shame how it all turned out for the man though.

You will see some wild stuff in the old times. I imagine it's because with smaller gloves an overhand punch or wide hook could be worth the gamble, as there are too many sweet subtleties I see in old timers (including Lynch's very subtle reflexive head movement, well picked up on) for me to think they were simply stupid enough to think that would be effective.

Lynch was clearly a sharp counter puncher as well as having a varied offence and bad intentions.

He'd had a hard schedule. If he'd never been a serious drinker (or had turned the corner at some stage) I still think he would've ended having to move up, and depending on how long he manages to attain top level fitness and physical being he would have either Sixto Escobar or Manuel Ortiz to contend with IIRC.

The latter, in particular, is not one I'd favour Lynch in. So I'd say after Fly he probably wouldn't have gone on to add a huge deal to his legacy, of course, only speculative :good
