For putting Toney in with couture. That was a horrible matchup. A pure wrestler against a boxer? At least put him in with a striker, so the fight is entertaining. Dana just wanted Toney to get embarrassed . It would have happened sooner or later but still. Blame him for putting this farce together in the first place.

i think dana just set himself up to have a lot of fighters demanding more money. to pay a washed up boxer .75 mil or whatever for 1 fight that dana should've realized was going to be a joke should get most guys looking to get more than the 15k he doles out edit: guess it depends on the ppv buys to see if in anyway it was worth it to pay toney so much. also, i guess u can argue it may validate mma to some casual fans to a degree but still hard to figure toney's purse was worth it esp to what other ufc fighters make
:deal How many excuses can we make for Toney? Put him in there with a HW Muay Thai based striker and Toney would have been brutally destroyed. Dana did the **** talker a favor by getting it over with early and saving Toney from embaressing himself any further if that is possible.
ufc wanted to win at all costs. we all know toney would **** up anybody in the ufc who would trade blows with him. toney would own all the strikers such as liddel, rampage, evans, machida, jardine. can i get an ameN?
Amen! If they were foolish enough to try and outbox him, but it would never happen. all the fighters you just mentioned would go for the takedown in the first 30 seconds as well. thats mma, the opponent plays to your weakness not your strength:deal
I'd perhaps blame both of them, but primarily Dana because only he had the authority to make that mismatch. As far as the UFC are considered, James Toney is just some dude talking a lot of **** about what is supposed to be a legitimate and serious sport, I don't see how that is enough reason to promote a mismatch like that. He's talking **** so we'll make an example out of him? That's playground antics, the UFC is a legitimate and a serious sport that should be above that. Do you suppose De La Hoya would have Hopkins fight Couture under the Marquees of queensbury if he started talking a bit of crap to the media? I say no. Admittedly, I was giving James Toney a punchers chance before the opening bell but 5 seconds in, even before the take-down, it was evident what was about to happen. Toney was completely out of his element, and Couture looked like he had trained every bit as hard to fight a rank novice just as he had against a Chuck Liddell or a Tim Sylvia. I don't wish to see anymore Boxers try to cross over to Mixed Martial Arts, at least not in the manner that James attempted. I can hardly believe I ignored a legitimate world title fight like Segura vs Calderon too watch a decorated Boxer get humiliated by a Wrestler. Never again. Reading posts like, "Go to sleep *****, go to sleep" whilst Toney was being mounted effortlessly was a little disturbing too. I think it was that Beebs 'fella.
Outbox him? They could also out - Muay Thai him i would think Yaca You? Get Toney in with current HW Muay Thai fighters and he would get brutally owned. How is he going to deal with getting kicked, kneed, elbowed and thrown?
I think the point the TS was trying to make was fairly clear, PIRA. Dana White could have matched James Toney with a stand-up type fighter to give the whole promotion a little bit of credibility. Mixed Martial Arts has indeed evolved from 10 years ago, most fighters are at least good in a wide range of disciplines, but you still have fighters getting air time who have no intention of doing anything but standing up. Even with the ability to kick, Toney would have had a much better chance against someone who fits that description rather than a wrestler like Couture. In any event, boxers need to stay away from the Octagon.
Tell me who in the UFC's roster would satisfy all the excuse makers? Toney and nuthuggers would have bitched and squirmed out of meeting a younger opponent or a current contender for his first MMA fight. Dana gave an older ATG to a self proclaimed ATG who can't get off his arse to even try and put some legitimacy into his trash talk. Toney got flogged by a basic move that teenagers all across America and Europe learn in their first Wrestling class. It's not Dana's responsibility to manage Toney's ego.
I'm not making excuses for Toney. He went over to another sport and faced a decorated multi-weight UFC champion in his first outing and got wrecked. No surprise there, the majority of people predicted this happening, but the TS has made the point that Dana could have made it more of a spectacle by giving us a stand up fight. I don't see what's difficult to understand. James Toney is certainly an ATG. Perhaps he was just there for the pay day. It's Dana's responsibility to ensure UFC's integrity as a serious and legitimate sport.
atsch Those guys will beat Toney easy son. They might be strikers, but those guys are seasoned veterans and are fully aware that Toney will be dangerous if they don't use a takedown. Every single one of them have wrestling/wrestling-related background.
