Bob Arum: "Ali was more selfish, Manny is about helping the people"

Over the course of his career, he woke up and became a better person, but Ali the man was just a mouthpiece for the Nation of Islam from the early 60s to the early 70s. He did educate himself and he did become a great man, but at that came later. Before that, he called every black man he faced an "Uncle Tom" and even had the audacity to call Frazier a "gorilla", probably the most insulting racial slur he could have used against a black man short of the n-word itself. Ali is a great man, but he had to grow into that role. When he was really "The Greatest", he was a real ******* as a human being.

 

Ali also said in a Playboy interview, around 1974-75, that Muslims who marry non-Muslims should be killed.

 

I never knew everyone's favorite boxer was that extreme.

 

Arum is a dumb ass for real. Manny hasn't did nearly the things Ali did to help people. Ali, almost gave up his career for a cause in his PRIME 20's to help end an unjust war.

I read it awhile ago, either in "The Muhammad Ali Reader" by Gerard Early or "The Life and Times of Muhammad Ali" by Thomas Hauser. I get those two mixed up.
