Never thought of it like that but your right. I've got tbh, I bought in to it with spink s v tyson.
I really thought he might stand at least a chance of testing Tyson, taking him in to the latter round maybe.
Was I pissed off with that fight!

Tyson v Spinks was the most heavily hyped fight in my time as a boxing fan.

It was the only time since the original Frazier v Ali that two undefeated H/W champions of the World faced each other with all the marbles on the line. By "all the marbles", I mean all the alphabet belts plus the lineal championship.

Fury v AJ is certainly an historically significant fight. It will be the UK's version of Frazier v Ali or Tyson v Spinks albeit AJ isn't going in with an 'O'. All the marbles will be on the table. The WBO belt doesn't really matter in this context.

When it happens, sit back & enjoy a piece of history.

Spinks had after all looked a bit destructive the year before when emphatically taking out Cooney, who was the favourite going in despite his inactivity.

I think Ali picked Spinks and probably a few other big names in boxing did. There was real excitement around the fight, which is a bit hard to relate to after Tyson made it looked like a man against a boy the way he did.

For Tyson-Holy, there was outrage that also looked to be well motivated. A classic "let's take the washed up crowd favourite for big bucks instead of a live challenge", but boy how it backfired.

When Tyson got out of prison, one wanted him to show that he still had something left and then face Bowe. And he did look scintillating in crushing Bruno, but dropped that title in order to take on the soft touch Seldon at about the same time that Golota beat Bowe from the world stage. By the year's end it was instead Holy, who had looked like damaged goods just one year earlier, who stood at the top of the heap. Crazy how fast things can change.

Same with Fury too in a way. Look at him a couple of years ago, he looked washed up, unfit and looked like never getting back to where he was.
And now. Top of the pile and the man to beat, it's crazy.

Well Fergy, I suppose you can’t argue with the fact that the winner will be the first heavyweight to hold all the 4 currently recognised ‘world’ title belts but that apart is it really the biggest heavyweight fight since 1971 in terms of worldwide sporting exposure and appeal not just within the boxing community? I guess only the people that were around at the time can really judge how big, important and highly anticipated the following fights were in comparison to Fury/Joshua but I personally think they were bigger mainly because of the personalities of the fighters in them and the circumstances around the fights.

    George Foreman vs Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier III
Leon Spinks vs Muhammad Ali II
    Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali
    Larry Holmes vs Gerry Cooney
    Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks

All good points Ken, and valid. Those were big fights in other ways from being unification matches.

Looking back Ken, Cooney v Holmes, that was massive. I'm a littt to young to remember Foreman v Ali and just remember Leon Spinks beating him, but I remember the publicity regarding Holmes meeting Cooney. Good fight but was it worth the hype? Not hundred per cent sure.

It is. I hold his rematch against Wilder as probably the best HW performance of the 2000's. The first one (which he clearly won) comes highly as well, considering he'd been depressed and coke and booze not long before.

I'm very glad to have these guys peaking at the same time. Would be tragic if they don't face off now that it's really relevant.

For Holmes it was. Apart from probably the Ali fight, I think looking back, this would be the one fight that Holmes would have chosen to have won above all the other fights in his career. Maybe not quite the Jack Johnson vs Jim Jeffries of its day but the whole racial toxicity surrounding the buildup of the fight just seem to transcend the sport itself though unfortunately not in a good way.

That's the kind of match-up that would be dismissed on internet forums today, and with some cause too. Cooney had been fed a careful diet of washed up fighters to build his rep on, faced even fewer real tests than even Wilder ahead of Fury.

AJ has at least clearly beat a half a dozen or so ranked fighters and Fury has his victories over Wlad and Wilder.
