Between 1890 and 1905 Fitz was only stopped twice, and both of those defeats were by James J. Jeffries. And Fitz certainly didn't disgrace himself in either of those bouts. In fact, one sportswriter who witnessed his second fight with Jeff said that he gave Jeffries a worse beating than Dempsey gave Willard in 1919. In the second Jeffries fight, age and bad hands caught up with him. Fitz's KO losses to Phila Jack O'Brien, Jack Johnson, and Bill Lang came at the end of his career when he was well into his 40s. During his peak years he was phenomenal. He was knocked down a few times, but the only one who could keep him down was Jeff, who said that Fitz was the best fighter he ever faced. So I would have to conclude that his chin was pretty good!
