Also I wonder if any of his descendants have ever come to light? Just wondering. A 3 times first 3 weight world champion int the family and Heavyweight at that and his grave was abandoned.

Whoever desecrated his grave is getting KTFO'd by Mr. Fitzsimmons in the afterlife.

Strange that there isn't more well-designed statues and memorials for boxers.

Great! I have much respect for Jim Wearne, and the people who donated, including the Cemetery owner.

Sadly at the funeral there was only allegedly one family member, Bobs 4th wife Temo, due to the family believing that Bob wished to be cremated, his widow refused insisting he be buried, so family did not attend the funeral.

There is a macabre tale that supposedly when his widow Temo got low on funds in later life, she wanted Bobs body exhumed as he had nine diamonds in his teeth which she wanted retrieved and sold, the Chicago authorities refused her request.

Bob is in good company in his final resting place, as in fact another ATG heavyweight champion by the name of Jack Johnson is buried in the same cemetery.

I guess if you been dead for a little over 100 years, that is going to happen. I do recall like what 5 years?? Joe Gans grave was also restored.

There was a plan at the time for a more elaborate gravestone to be paid for by public subscription, but Fitzsimmons' widow vetoed the idea.

"Bob left little when he died. It would not be his wish to have such a monument as that planned by his friends. But Bob will have a monument, for I already have arranged for that, and it will be ready to be placed over the grave tomorrow. It is not very costly, but it is the best I could afford. I hope the talk of a public testimonial will be dropped. I want Bob to rest in peace."

Shame his year of birth is wrong on the stone.

That is so awesome! Ever since I read about him in the 1980s in a book with all the heavyweights champions in history, I thought he must have been one of the toughest men around ever, pound for pound. I real life iron man!

Was he born in 1863, BeerGut? It says that on wikipedia but the picture of his gravestone there looks like it says 1862 on it, like the restored one.

Wonder if, a100 years after we've been buried, how our grave s would look!?
No one's gonna remember us, that s a sad but true thought.
