This content is protected He was way past his best (46 years old) and he didn't look good here, but it's amazing quality for such an old fight! I really hope that we'll find something new with Bob in future.
Was the referee[Arthur Scott], shortsighted? I kept hoping he would get caught by one of Lang's swings, and good God Almighty ,at the merest hint of a clinch he was in there! Knobhead!
Not only was he 46, the heat that day was horrific. All things considered, he doesn't look bad at all, atleast not in round 10, Lang actually had a alot of trouble landing clean, and he showed incredible toughness. I think Fitzsimmons deserves rated as one of the toughest boxers ever. Apparently he looked a lot better in training than in the fight itself, he had been sparrign Tommy Burns.
I also think that with better quality we can see some defensive nuances of Fitzsimmons boxing and he didn't look clueless like some people believe. He used subtle head movement and he catched opponent's punches with his elbows quite successfully. 100% agree with you on his toughness. I used to think that Fitzsimmons chin and toughness were his relative weakness, but the more I gain info about him, the more I am impressed with his toughness. It's not only about physical durability, but also his mindset - he was always there to take hard bombs from fighters much bigger than him - even as an old man.
Floyd is a welterweight, so it's not exactly a fair comparison. But I still give Floyd a decent chance, he's lightyears more skilled.
Yeah, Floyd may be too small. If we want to match Fitz with a modern fighter today, let's see him at 168 against Canelo. That would be a fair fight. Or how about against prime GGG (from 6-7 years ago)?
It would be interesting to see Fitz against top tier modern boxer like Canelo, certainly a nice thought experiment.
