Fitzsimmons beat up Maher (Shavers of his day) badly twice, I don't think it's reasonable to believe that Earnie would destroy him. Going in for a brawl with peak Fitzsimmons is stupid unless you have granite chin. Shavers was far from durable guy and Fitz would counter him to death.

 

You should see a doctor. That's an ominous sign.

 

Is beating up Maher a big deal? He was stopped 19 times by MWs, LHWs and small HWs - 14 times inside of 2 rounds! No reason to think he would last very long against Shavers.

And watching the couple of clips we have of Fitz - what is it you see, that tells you he would counter Shavers to death?

 

He was stopped when he was old, alcoholic and had over 100 fights on his resume. How many times was he stopped until 1900?

He countered Corbett to the body very effectively and he outjabbed Jim in the second part of the fight. Corbett was much faster than Shavers and he was more defensive minded. Fitz caught him with some powerful body shots despite Corbett's constant movement. Shavers would be a big and slow target for him.
