I don't think Shavers will ever be able to land his ko shots on Fitz. He's only ever one punch from winning the fight, but he spent his whole career one punch from winning the fight, he just didn't find it often. Fitz tears him a new one.
Is this a primary source, or just listed weight from boxrec? Besides, are we going to argue about 5 lbs? Ruhlin was in 200 lbs range for all of his career.
No, let's not argue about 5 lbs! How about if we simply look at the footage available to us - where Fitz looks (to put it kindly) less than impressive. Does he really look to you, like someone who would toy with Shavers and tear him a new one?
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle says Ruhlin claimed to be 195, but looked 10Ibs heavier. If I find Ruhlin actually being weighed around the time of the fight I'll post it, as I don't think guesimated weights count for much
I've said it many times (including posts in this thread) - Fitzsimmons looks impressive to me. He had much more elusive target in front on him in available footage and yet he countered him and knocked him out with perfectly set up punch. Shavers is much easier to hit than Corbett and Fitz did a lot of damage against these kind of fighters. Unless you talk about Fitzsimmons from Lang fight, then I agree - 50 years old Fitzsimmons would be stopped by Shavers quickly.
I am a huge Fitz fan, however i cannot see him giving away 40 pounds or so in weight to Shavers and still winning, yes Shavers was the one punch away from winning at highest level guy, but alas i think Shavers eventually bullies Fitz to eventually land that one punch, Fitz in this bout would have at best have been a low weight light heavy. Fitz of course had fought guys as big as Shavers, Jeffries the obvious one, but Fitz would lose the fight as he did against Jefferies in my opinion, but Shavers would know he had been in a fight for sure.
A counter to that is that old Fitzsimmons gave Jeffries all he could handle and he landed on him plenty of punches. Jeffries was durable enough to sustain that, I have doubts about Shavers chin though. Not to mention that it's likely that Jeffries was better defensively than Shavers, who was easy to hit.
Evnie Shavers against a 168lb man. Roy Jones stand the best chance but as a fan I wouldn't completely fancy his chances. Maybe he could do a Jimmy Young. But Fitz isn't ending well.
He'd have to find him first and then avoid any counters at the same time (which would be murderous to him). I don't know, I think that Fitz'd have more than decent chances!
