Bob could hit...but Tunney was one of the smartest fighters of all time...Tunney wins...

I'd go with that, I see Tunney beating him to the punch and doing more damage than Corbett in the process

And if you feel the talent pools, competition and rewards were as deep/high in Fitz's era as they were in Tunney's era

I would favor Tunney on points, though I can see Fitz catching him and ending the night, this is a really tough call.... I am going to stick with my original thought though Tunney wins, he gets clipped a fair share in the fight but survives to take a close decision victory..

The Tunney that beat Dempsey twice and destroyed Heeney would be too much for Fitz. He could box, move and punch and was durable as well. The Boxing sea that Tunney swam in was a bit deeper than Bob's and contained bigger fish. Plus the science had evolved to a degree as evidenced by the the increasing development of the jab as an offensive and defensive weapon....which Tunney used superbly by the way. I dont think Fitz's wait and bait tactic would work with Gene. It almost didn't with Corbett and Tunney is a bigger and better version of Jim,,,in my opinion of course. It's possible that Bob could catch Gene and end it but not likely. Tunney by decision or possible late round stoppage.

This. Except that we don't know than Tunney could take punishment from a big time puncher. He never fought any (sans washed-up Dempsey)

The notion that Tunney was the heavyweight version of Willie Pep is once again being resurrected in this thread. He wasn't. Read the fight reports and round-by-rounds. While a good boxer he was no will-o-the-wisp. He was tagged clean and often and wasn't as elusive as his legend dictates.

There's a big difference between getting tagged often by the average to good punchers Tunney faced, quite another getting tagged often by Fitz, who was a monster puncher, with perfect timing and a master at setting traps and striking out like a rattlesnake.

Fitz by KO before 10 rounds have elapsed.

Tunney was an alien from the future for all those guys of his time, nevermind guys from an earlier time. Tunney would have decisively whipped Fitz before 10 rounds elapsed.

Tunney was ahead of his time and despite Fitzimmons being craftier than a powerhouse like Dempsey, Tunney would overwhelm him with his speed, timing, and movement. Tunneys defense would prevent him from getting kod, but not sayin he wouldnt get dropped. I think he bangs up Bob pretty good before going in for a kill late.

So we have a 167 lb fitzsimmons that fought corbett vrs a 174 lb tunney that fought greb?

or a 167 lb fitzsimmons that fought corbett vrs a 190 lb tunney that fought dempsey?

vrs the 174 lb tunney that fought greb fitz easily wins this.

vrs the 190 lb tunney that fought dempsey tunney might have a bit too much of a chin and power for fitz.
