Bob Fizsimmons on a suprisingly close 15 round decision. McAvoy takes the fight to Fitz. & throws Bob off his gameplan. But Fitz recovers in enough time to pull it out.
You've got to be kidding me. Fitz by KO. A man by the name of Tom Sharkey took it to Fitz too, and got KO'd. So did Maher. And they were bigger and stronger.
Fitz would've dissected him early if he tried to take the fight to Bob- he was too smart, crafty, and hit too hard. If Jock tried to box him, he may last the distance, but I think Fitz is just a different class of fighter. McAvoy is almost never brought up so it's good to see him get some mention, though. My guess is that he feels Fitz's power early and if he survives, fights a more conservative gameplan to last the distance, with Bob settling for the UD win since he typically didn't force for the knockout. If McAvoy keeps pressing, Bob would stop him.
Oh yes Fitz did go for a knockout - in every fight. Since when did he go for a decision - at age 40? In his 20s and 30s most of his fights were fights to the finish and they always ended much sooner than 15 rounds, even against Corbett, so I just don't see how this guy lasts 15. Fitz was a KO artist whether you came to him or ran from him.
Just read the thread title- apparently my lack of sleep's catching up to me because for some reason I thought it was the old Fitz that fought at light heavyweight. atsch:nut
Keep in mind also that Fitz was essentially a light-heavyweight when he was fighting as a heavyweight. Also, in the one fight in which he went the distance - to win the light heavy title against Gardner, even at age 40, he dropped Gardner several times.
