I agree, but I'll add that I think Fitz gets it worse. Maybe lasts more than two, but takes a bludgeoning.
Frazier is tailor made for Fitz who uses a double stop, foot shift and mandible punch to stop Joe in his tracks. This one ends early for old Ruby Robert.
I like Frazier by mid rounds ko, his constant pressure and stance give Fitz little opportunity to land his left wallop into Frazier's midsection. Fitz might have some early success and get Joe's attention, possibly floor him in the first couple of rounds, but his own lack of mobility will see him begin to ship left hooks and wilt as the fight progresses.Frazier had pretty fast hands and he probably begins to get off first ,after he weathers the early stages when he is usually most vulnerable.
Bob and weaving fighters tend to leave their bodies open as a stationary target while moving their heads. The problem of course is dropping your hands to reach that body.... Fitz's best chance would be to hit and away sharpshooting the body. I dunno if he had the uppercut necessary to deal with smothering and mauling him properly. Fitz was pretty durable though, Jeffries pounded away at his body for a long time and he didnt go down...
agreed. fitz was 167 lbs when he beat corbett and frazier was 205 when he beat ali. i'd bet the house on this one.
You people obviously know nothing regarding Fitz's famous Tong and Anvil combo foot shift, right hand thrust to mandiblary nerve bundle.
I love the tales of Fitz, etc.... But for the sake of Amon Ra, from 1887 to 2011, I cannot put Bob Fitz in my top-10 at all.... Hell, Joseph Frazier himself barely cracks my top-10, but I've tied him with Sonny Liston...... Again, I like the tales / tales of how Bob Fitz once KO'd a T-Rex with a single shot to the creatures jaw, but I think Joe Frazier is a different kind of beast in the ring.... MR.BILLhat:bbb
I disagree, bob and weave fighters tend to ship punishment around the head especially the eyebrows and forehead, for example Armstrong ,Langford, Marciano, Greb, Frazier, four of whom ended up visually impaired.Dempsey refused a third fight with Tunney for fear of the same thing happening to him.Marciano the exception, quit before the cumulative effect became apparent.
Well that's because they're more prone to head clashes and dirty tactics overall as infighters(thumbs in eyes, open glove rakes, elbows), not necessarily because the bob and weave as a stance is conducive to taking punches to the head. The stance and approach is designed for the sole purpose of slipping punches to the head, no? A low guard like Fitzsimmons is one more designed for blocking with gloves up top and elbows for body punches.
I dont know your ring experience, but stand up in the classic English style, left slightly extended right covering the chin, look in a mirror, then adopt the crouch both arms up, forearms, protecting the chest and ribs, chin down, then tell me which seems most vulnerable to body punches? All the left side of the former is exposed whenever a jab is thrown, or the right side if he is a southpaw. Then ask yourself how many body punches you can recall Frazier,Marciano, Dempsey,Armstrong , Walker, shipping? Want a modern example? Tyson.
Not much, apart from spars against amateurs and pros at my local free police gym in town. Armstrong, Dempsey, and Frazier had slightly more shelled approaches though, and I think it varies depending on how centerlined you were. I've never attempted the english style as i've never been taught something like that.... but I have seen Marciano taking his uppercuts and hooks on the sides around the elbows in close. Same with Armstrong against Ambers. I think that with the old style you have to reach to hit someone's body past their arms, and the elbows are naturally covering up the livers and kidneys to an extent. The plexus and stomach etc are exposed, but that can be compensated by rotating your body so that your left shoulder and leg are firmly in front. I do recall Holyfield getting in some solid bodywork on Tyson. he did fight in a very headhunting centric HW era though... It's all theoretical. What say you and I meet up old man, and we do our best Fitzsimmons-Corbett impression
Well said, except I think Bobby Fitz is face down with one leg twitching instead of looking at the stars.
It's all about whether Frazier's got a glass solar plexus, something fighters of his day just weren't skilled enough to test him at. Ruby Robert's gonna flex those surgical skillz and test that 'plex. :!:
