Barbados Joe Walcott did beat up a fringe contender as big as Lennox Lewis, and a contender as big as Hasim Ramhan.

Considering that it takes Wlad about 5 rounds to throw a power punch i'd say Fitz would probably get more than a few good whacks in. I love reading these Klitschko h2h matchup threads by the way, reading Wlad get described as a 6'6' 240 nutrionally endowed skilled adept warrior and then watching him tentatively prod and poke at fatties like a lion with anxiety issues for 10+ is about as funny as watching Fitz's bald dome do leanbacks and clinch wrestling against Corbett

I understand why apollack is saying what he is saying, because everybody who has researched Fitzsimmons career in depth has had to pinch thmself at times. You move towards conclusions that you had never expected. Ther is just too much to dismiss.

    You start to think:

Even if this 200/240lb guy was like a fringe contender today or a Commonwealth level fighter, how the f**k did a middlewight do that to him?

Couldn't that fighter have managed something agasinst this little guy?

When have I ever seen a fighter today destroy sombody his own size so economicaly, even if there was a quality disparity, let alone sombody with a Nlb weight advantage?

Eventualy it become inescapable that you are looking at a truly phenomenal fighter, who we will probably never see the likes of again.

Fitz was stupendously good and a freak of nature. But it is best to judge him within the context of his time.

Frankly, I find the footage of him and his contemporaries, limited tho it may be, a bit disturbing. I know Fitz was a cagey setter of traps with concussive power but is almost as if we are speaking of two different sports when comparing boxing now and then. So much is done differently and so much of what he does is verboten on day one in the gym.

I personally would have liked to see a more aggressive version of Fitz: Like the Sharkey and Ruhlin knockouts on film.

I suppose the real question is whether or not Fitz's little horse drawn carriage stops to give Wlad a lift as he sits in his ferrari beside the road, all out of gas with nothing left in the tank.
