Just say for a moment that Bob Foster had a chin like Billy Conn. Could he have made a bigger splash in his own era at heavyweight? If not then could he have been sucessfull at heavyweight in a weaker era with said iron whiskers?
Maybe His Long Slender Body would have become a target ? whilst Bob could certainly hand it out i dont bthink he had the physionomy (?) to hold heavy shots from heavyweights, even with a good chin those slender legs look like they would Jelly-up quite nicely.
I can't remember his name (Maybe Manassa could help me out as he has mentioned him before) but there was a bantamweight who was lanky and had really long legs and I don't think he was ever floored. Had one of the best chins ever.
Foster had tremendous difficulty putting on weight to tackle the bigger boys,it wasnt that his chin was so bad ,he lacked the bulk and strength to deal with them, plus his power, sensational at 175 was obviously diminished against the heavies, very few LH,s have carried their power up to Heavy against top men.Foater was an ATG at LH,but even with an Ali chin would only have been an average heavyweight ,imo.
Thats the one! All time great chin yet had skinny long legs like Hearns and Foster who weren't exactly known for their durability.
I just can't help but think that he probably had enough power to make waves at heavyweight if all the other variables held up. Light heavyweights with less of a reputation as punchers have caried their power up.
He didn't have the strength, irrespective of chin. Although he'd have done ok. The punch wasn't a factor though at heavy (as we know, of course).
I always thought that Monzon actually looked really big. He wasn't ripped to shreds like Marvin but I can't see him getting pushed around in there by anyone. He seemed more like a 'solid' guy.
you cannot give fighters good chins if they are built a certain way. Foster was just too stretched out to have a great chin.
True, but their are exceptions though. Paul William, with his dimensions looked like a KO waiting to happen, but he's proven himself time after time to have a great chin and durability (the Martinez fight aside).
Foster wasn't cut out to be anything bt a lightheavyweight...like Monzon was only meant for the middleweight division.
agreed 100%, foster with iron chin would have taken a beating on his feet, but still he loses against good-great hws,his chin is not relevant here, like you said he did not have the builk to fight at hw
