Bob Foster vs Roy Jone Jr at LHW?

Hey I agree with many of the posts here... RJJ is incredibly gighted and would be a force at 175. And he could outbox Faster, carefully and at a comfortable distance to potshot. I am not one of those who thinks ANY puncher could get to Jones chin. However, Foster is a guy, who on any given night could take out ANY of the 175 greats. I do also think that RJJ has enough snap in his shots to gain Fosters respect and even hurt him.If if I had to place a bet, Fosters KO power vs. Jones` chin, at some point I think he could get to him...

 

Foster stayed real sideways to his opponents and that long left jab is very active. That is not a combination that lends itself to Jones leaping in with punches, especially given that Foster moves pretty well in the ring. That left hand will keep Jones honest and at bay, and God help him the first time he tries to leap in and comes up short.
Jones has an advantage in speed, which would be offset by the lengths he'd have to travel to get into a punching range against the long and rangy Foster. His best shot would be to land something big early before Foster started measuring him, setting him up and timing him.
Foster had an excellant jab, a very sharp and damaging right hand, and he set up that left hook in many subtle ways. He'd stop Jones in 7-8 rounds.

 

Great thread, keep it goin. Been rewatching Foster and he does crouch and give away size and ducks low but the guy had a great jab as shown by Ali's face. Also a ruthless finisher as shown in his destruction of Tiger but I find his combination punching underrated. Not in Roy's league of course but individually he did well for himself. Also like his calculating yet willing to take risk approach.


Both excellent fighters to watch especially during their reigns both having high ring IQ's. Jones not as technical but he had great sense of when to strike and when to move. Him and Saad the only non-technical fighters I can watch religiously lol. Will continue watching more of Foster and study fights of Roy though I got his style down in my head. Underrated feinter. Also underrated is Roy against punchers in fantasy matchups. You have to find him to take him out and never has he shown chin weaknesses in the past but it's Foster's timing and commitment towards fighting which makes this a tougher fight to call.

 

Foster is a great fighter but he'd be in trouble against Jones...Foster is taller and has the longer reach but he fights from a crouch taking away his ranginess. Also his defense is adequate but he is very hittable against lesser punchers and boxers than Jones. He is very predictable and would be there to be countered all day, also he had trouble with movers....Stylewise this is a nightmare for Foster he loses a UD

 

I agree,great thread. I lean towards Foster,but... It is not impossible to envision a prime time RKK boxing lesson consisting of quicl flurries,lot of movement and not putting himself at risk for Fosters bombs by way of counters. The catch is that RJJ would have to fight a perfect fight... One slip, and yes Foster has THAT kind of power to make him pay...

 

Yep my philosophy too. Jones wouldn't come in pressing the action like Tiger(sorry I reference this fight so much it was the most recent fight of Foster I saw) making himself more of a target. Jones would move around and flurry and I think he'd be too quick for Foster to take afvantage of him on the ropes but he can still catch him. Timing is a factor for both guys though.

Foster was determined especially as the lhw king but maybe Jones is more of his stylistic nightmare than otherwise as pugilist states. Split in the middle to consider a victor. I wish there was a game where I could make fantasy fights with any boxer in history and watch the fight and I would simulate this 10 times.

Jones would enjoy a few rounds of dominance against Foster due to his speed...until he got caught. It would have been a chilling knoclout for Foster.
