So this is why I think Jones stands more than a chance against Foster; he obviously has the smarts and durability to deal with a heavyweight, which is something only a few LHW's can claim, and Foster isn't one of them.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Jones land something on Foster and earn a stoppage.

That may consist of Roy havin to force a bit of a trade off and I dont see Roy doin anything but his stick and move(run) tactics because of Fosters reach and punching ability. I think Foster lands the first real shot and suddenly Roy realizes he may have made a mistake taking this fight which in hine sight he would not take this fight.:yep

Foster was exciting. Tall, lanky, good power, liked to brawl, and wasn't hard to find. He didn't take full advantage of his height and reach and he wasn't the most durable fighter to ever step in the ring... but if he hit a LHW clean, it was usually lights out. Prior to winning a world title he was stopped in the 8th by Doug Jones in a one-sided beating, he was decisioned by Maura Mina, he was stopped in the 7th by Ernie Terrell, and he lost a clear decision to Zora Folley. Toward the end of Dick Tiger's career, Tiger won the LHW title... Foster knocked Tiger out in the 4th round and won the LHW World Title. Tiger only fought 4 more times. Foster fought Joe Frazier for the HW World Title and was stopped in the 2nd round. He also moved up to fight Muhammad Ali for the NABF HW title and was stopped in the 8th round (one-sided beating). Foster defended the LHW title 14 times. The 14th defense was a draw then he briefly retired. He came back and went 5-2 (4) (he was stopped in his last 2 fights) then retired again. During his reign as LHW Champ he beat Vicente Rondon KO2 and Mike Quarry KO4.

Jones was a very special fighter. At his best he was extremely fast, elusive, accurate, had good power, good stamina, and was durable. He won clear decisions over good fighters. He knocked out good fighters. Early in their career he beat Bernard Hopkins by decision. He won one-sided decisions over Jorge Castro, James Toney, Reggie Johnson, David Telesco, and Julio C. Gonzalez. He also decisioned Mike McCallum, Lou Del Valle, Antonio Tarver, Felix Trinidad, John Ruiz, and Antonio Tarver. He knocked out Jorge Vaca, Thulane Malinga, Thomas Tate, Antoine Byrd, Vinny Pazienza, Merqui Sosa, Eric Lucas, Montell Griffin, Virgil Hill (body shot), Otis Grant, Richard Hall, Derrick Harmon, Eric Harding, Clinton Woods, Omar Sheika, and Jeff Lacy.

Physically, Foster was about 3-4" taller and his reach was about 5" longer. Jones only fought once at HW but he clearly beat John Ruiz in that fight to win the WBA HW Title. When Foster fought a decent HW he was knocked out every time (Doug Jones, Terrell, Frazier, and Ali)... except for L10 Zora Folley (which was a clear win for Folley). At LHW, the only Foster opponents worth mentioning are Tiger, Rondon, and Quarry.

Jones definately has the better resume. Getting your ass handed to you by Frazier and Ali doesn't gain you any points... even if you really belonged at LHW. Getting your ass handed to you by Jones and Terrell really doesn't do it for me. Getting schooled by Folley isn't gonna make me pick you over Roy Jones Jr. So what's left? The Tiger KO was impressive but Tiger was a blown up MW and was past prime. What else? Rondon and Quarry? OK, nice wins! What else?

    I'll take Jones by decision.

If you are claiming he is that great of a fighter, than I don't see this as mount everest. Just a hill. An obsticle. Nothing more. and something he is certainly capable of handling and doing. So no get out of jail free card.

What it doesn't do is explain and justify a 1 punch brutal ko to a guy like a 35 year old Tarver.

Who else you picking an old Tarver to 1 punch?

Bump for LaMotta, 1. Jones is definitely not the best LHW ever, and 2. Bumping threads is a thing.

I like Jones to lead with his right at some point and get caught with a counter left hook, and then it's all over. Jones wasn't unhitable.

Again it is not possible to fight each others opponents. Bob Foster was all business during a title defense, sure he was hurt at times but who has not, let's be realistic. Roy Jones is very quick, I have to admit. He does have exceptional skill, but a fighter of his caliber and skill does not have to be cute in the ring. I feel that Foster's experience and tenacity will see him through to a late round stoppage, especially if we are talking about Bob's title reign, 1968-1974. It does not matter who you fight, and what era, it does take skill to win, sure Bob was hurt by Frank De Paula in a 1969 title defense, but Foster won by KO. He did not complain about who he had to fight, only when the WBA,WBC were pulling him two ways, about fighting their mandatory challengers, Victor Galindez and John Conteh, in 1974. He never became overly worried about the purses, like they do today. Sure he lost to heavyweights like, Joe Frazier, Doug Jones, and Ernie Terrell, but I never saw Jones fight the likes of Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis,or Oliver McCall. Who did he beat, John Ruiz.

It would have been an extremely dangerous fight for Roy.

I can envisage both guys winning.

    How about Foster vs Toney?

I've never seen that discussed on here.

You've got to give Bob huge, huge credit for stepping up to HW to face Ali and Frazier.

I can't believe he did that.

You cant really criticise Roy for not fighting guys like Bowe and Lennox though.

You have to remember that Roy was once a MW.
