I missed that! In terms of just power, I would rank Spinks, Saad Muhammad, Moore, and Bivins higher. Possibly Charles.
Not kidding. Spinks and Charles had crushing power at 175 and carried their power to heavy, something Foster could not do. Saad Muhammad was simply a devastating KO puncher that could turn a fight with one punch. Foster could do this as well, but only with the relatively weaker opponents he fought like Quarry, and an old Tiger. When he fought Fourie, Anderson, Ahumanda, and even Finnegan, he was not able to show one shot power.
Ooooooooooooooooooook. Let me get this straight. You are going to use 4 bouts against Foster taken from when he was 34 and older and obviously at the tail of his run? You should be praising him for still being champ. At this stage he'd had about 20 more fights than Spinks entire career. He did well to KO the likes of Quarry and Rondon when he did. I'm always amused when peeps use the Fourie fights (and similar) against him like it's some kind of revelation. Should we judge Jones by Tarver and Johnson? Bit worse than Foster winning but not ko'ing? Saad was getting whupped by every man and his dog from 27 on. So much for the punch, surely not lost at 27. Spinks was retired at 32 with a 32 fight career. As for Foster not carrying his power, he hit damn hard at heavyweight but lacked the physicality to support it. This has little to do with 175 power if we look closely. Saying Spinks carried his power to heavyweight is totally incorrect. He pitter patted Holmes with zero power effect and only stopped a couple of easy beats there. Charles hit ok at Heavyweight but was anything but a KO machine.
Bob was just out great, but there were a number of LH's I would put in front of him. Tunney (when a LH), Charles, Moore, Loughran, Langford, and maybe Conn if Billy didn't insist on getting to close.
Maybe in terms of accomplishments (Charles, especially) but you can't believe everyone on that list could beat Foster.
Russell,,hmmmmm, grumble,,,,hmmmmm, well in looking over the list I do think Conn would get too close and get ko'd by a prime Foster so off he goes. Just maybe Bob would catch Langford coming in but Sam just looked too strong to me. Maybe Tunney would have a hard time with Bobs long arms but I will keep in with a win still. Moore could take a punch and only Charles and Floyd really took him out cleanly but I'll change it to a pick em. Tommy did get banged out by some bigger guys (like Sharkey) but he could jab with the best at light heavy. I think I will still go with him here friend.
Has everyone read the actual thread title - it's P4P power, not achievement or head to head - POWER ONLY.
Spinks was a solid puncher,Berlenbach could hit hard ,though most of his kos came over the second tier guys,Delaney was a good right hand puncher ,but really the only realistic rival to Foster among the LH champs is Moore,he kod tons of guys including top men like Bivins ,good heavies like Bob Baker, dropped Marciano etc.Could Foster floor the Rock?,he couldnt drop Ali? Pure one punch power ,I think we have to give it to Foster, though his resume isnt in the same league as Moores.,his kos were more devastating ,imo.
I put Moore's knockouts down to his ability to create situations and opportunities for himself rather than sheer power. His style was more fortified than Foster's and he was probably stronger, and that's why he fared better in the heavier weight class. Foster couldn't knock out heavyweights because he always lost to them; they were either too big and strong (not allowing Foster to set himself), or were defensively adept enough to avoid his shots. I think Foster sits at the top of the power punching light heavyweights, followed by Moore, Langford, Spinks, Charles etc...
Don't forget it's P4P, the likes of Hearns, Gomez, Arguello, Tyson, Julian Jackson et al are all available.
