The cruiserweight division for as long as it's existed was never known for extremely " skilled " fighters, but nevertheless the division has always been full of big, strong fighters that would've troubled Foster.

Holyfield was easily the most skilled the division has seen and it's a given that he would've knocked Foster out. I also think Vassiliy Jirov would've been too physically imposing for Foster and would've grinded him down by the mid-rounds. Haye is 50/50 in my view, James Toney 50/50.. might lean a little more towards Foster by a decision. All in all Foster would do alright but there would always be someone he'd eventually run into that would've probably beaten him.

And I wouldn't necessarily call Jones or Folley extremely " skilled ".. regardless of how many times people want to point out the Ali-Jones fight.

    Bob Foster is being underrated.

He lost to Jones, Folley, Terrell, Ali and Frazier, but that doesn't say anything about his chances against modern cruiserweights - most of whom barely make the grade as decent journeymen in the open heavy division.

Doug Jones was a very good fighter with 23 fights when he faced Foster, who had only had 9 and was a late sub. Jones knocked out Foster.
The next fight Jones had he KO'd one of the top heavyweights Folley, and the next fight after that he almost beat Cassius Clay !
The fact that a novice late-sub Foster couldn't beat Doug Jones shouldn't be much of a knock on Foster.

Ernie Terrell and Zora Folley were tough and hungry contenders when they beat Folley, on unbeaten runs of ten and seven fights respectively. You wont find many cruiserweights who would have done any better against those guys at that time. And you will find that many GOOD HEAVYWEIGHT contenders of the era lost to those guys too.

Ali and Frazier are all-time greats.

don't know how he'd get on with cruisers as he never was much heavier than 175 when he fought heavies but my dad said the best punch he ever saw was the one that foster detonated on mike quarry's jaw.
    i didn't agree,but he (foster)was a big banger.
    who hit harder at light-heavy?

Personally i cant see how you could not consider Folley in particular a very skilled fighter. Ive seen a few fights of his on my grandfathers old reel to reel projector and he looks very very good. I would say more skilled than most guys who campaigned as cruisers

Depends on the cruisers he had to fight, I could see Foster beating an Ocasio, or Cole, but a Qawi, Holyfield, or De Leon, not so sure.

I think so, anyone fancy Foster over Jerry Quarry, Floyd Patterson or Jimmy Ellis!

    Yes,

today's giants are a bigger animal, not better at all, but simply bigger & heavier divisions!
That counts, and though bigboys can be beaten - it's still dam hard against the better ones.

we got to stop this bull****, they are completely bigger animals, a different weight, and though not better, we have to match PROPER divisions, man for man!

Some fighters were cut out for just one division..like Foster at 175, Hagler and Monzon at 160, and really, despite the LaPorte win, 122 for Wilfredo Gomez. Foster's magic wouldn't have translated too well from 175 to cruiser IMO.

Frazier may not have been a "slob" against Foreman, but he was definitely not in eye of the tiger shape.

Frazier's best weight was in that 203-206 range. He stayed in that range for all his big fights through the FOTC.

I tend to agree with this. I've been seesawing on this topic, not sure if Foster could or could not cut it. I don't want to sell Foster short, but I think you've finally made up my mind for me.

Some fighters just find their magic in one division and never seem to be as good at a higher weight, as you've shown with those examples. (Not that Hagler or Monzon fought out of 160, but it's unlikely that they would have been anywhere near as successful had they.)

:good..Yes, I think both Monzon and Hagler were unique in knowing exactly where to stay, divisionwise...Gomez, Foster, they were clobbered when they ventured out of their ideal divisions. As scary as Foster was in the 175 class, he was strangely impotent at any higher weight..maybe he would have been effective at cruiser, but I doubt it. That long, lean frame of his was just not meant to be bogged down with extra weight.

I think Carlos De Leon is a bit underrated but he doesn't have a good style to deal with Foster in my opinion.
