It’s interesting that certain things, while there is some truth in them, get broadly repeated over and over, to the point of exaggeration and without specific address - a one size fits all throw away line. Sure, Shavers screwed up some opportunities to finish his man but there are also plenty of examples where Earnie didn’t, making all the right moves to see his opponent off. Like you, I immediately thought of Lyle vs Shavers. Shavers landed and landed well - there were no missed opportunities. He didn’t lose for lack of connection or follow ups. Lyle simply soaked up what Earnie threw at him - and returned in kind all the while. And, Lyle could really hit when he was properly intended - and Earnie forced a slugfest so Ron couldn’t help but reciprocate. I would have to give Ron the margin of advantage but Satts could certainly rip one or a few out that could make it interesting at one point.
I honestly don't think Earnie's chin gave away. It was moreso a case of Shavers being exhausted. I'd argue Shavers had the superior chin, but terrible stamina. Shavers' always had an excellent chin to me. Contrary to popular belief. Most of his stoppage losses, were from sheer exhaustion rather than being hurt. With the exception of the Quarry bout, where he took dozens of unanswered power punches.
I was focused on Lyles resilience but I agree that Shavers is/was underrated in that regard but there seems to be more people who have come around to the fact that it Earnies’s stamina contributed significantly to several of his demises, but then Earnie was always swinging for the fences from first bell. His best metered/paced fight was vs Ali, and he was still able to throw heavy shots throughout and very close to the finish of the fight. Lyles KO win was the most definitive KO/stopped imposed on Shavers but both guys, though still slinging shots, were clearly tired by round 5. Come round 6, Lyle got some nice shots home to finish it - but until then, Earnie was taking the punches of an unbridled Lyle very well - and we saw what Lyle was able to do to the very well chinned Foreman in his next fight up.
Lyle a solid favorite for mine. After his initial year Satterfield never strung over 4 wins in a row together in his entire career and there's some ordinary losses in there during his prime. Lyle stops him by 5 for me.
If there was a minute to go in the 2nd round when Shavers dropped him hard instead of no more fighting i'm very confident The Acorn would have ended it. He was still fresh and ready to roll. This content is protected
Helluva punch - and, for good measure, Earnie was moving back when he threw it. I know people defer to Earnie's natural power but that was a beautifully executed punch, right on the chin - and a very fast punch also. Sure, I don't even know if Earnie would need a minute to clean up. Lyle was in a very, very bad way - and I know there would've been an uproar if the ref stopped it (ala Chavez v Taylor) but technically, I don't think that Lyle actually stood independently within 10 seconds from hitting the floor - when the ref steps in at the end of the round - Lyle can barely walk back to his corner. Damn! Funny, note too, even though Lyle was the one who got belted and put down, he knows which way his corner is. Instead, it's Earnie who stops for a moment to compute which corner he needs to go back to. Lol. I think it was Duran who also did that from time to time, even when he clearly wasn't hurt.
Lyle's chin absorbed the punches of Earnie Shavers.Big Ron would definitely be able to cope with Satterfield's punches.
