By now you will have heard the news that Ricky Hatton has chosen Bob Shannon as his trainer for his comeback on 24th November at the M.E.N arena. For Bob, his lovely wife Jean, his family and indeed everyone associated with Bob and his gym, this is truly fantastic news. A more deserving man you will not find! For over 20years Bob has given his life to boxing, training fighters at his gym in the basement of a now abandoned youth centre in Manchester. His dedication and love for the sport of boxing never wavering through the hardest of times. Bob along with the support of his wife Jean has kept the gym going, training fighters of all levels and always believing he will get the best out of each and everyone of them. He has created a unique gym steeped in history. And now comes the opportunity that Bob truely deserves, with his skills and experience and old school ways, I personally think Bob will get the best out of Ricky. From what we have seen in the gym, even at these early stages, Ricky and Bob gel perfectly together. I asked Ricky on Friday what made him choose Bob? He replied "he has known Bob for many years and has always held him in high regard. He saw the work he did with his brother Matthew and how he came on leaps and bounds with Bob. He also added that he loves the fact that Bob is straight out the old school and that there is a connection between Bob and Billy Graham". This being that Bob and Billy came from the same gym and have similar methods, and as everyone would agree Rickys best performances without doubt were with Billy. I believe Bob has more strings to his bow, greater variety on his padwork and bodybag sessions. He also has a real drive, focus and a great boxing brain! Bob for sure will get Ricky in tip top condition. What Bob has got with Ricky is a ferrari in for a service, he will fine tune it and send it out sparkling on November 24th. All Bobs fighters are supremely fit and can do 12 rounds at pace with room to spare. Rickys in great hands and I would like to wish them all the success in the world. Ricky because he is a down to earth fella and one of the best and most exciting fighters this country has ever produced and Bob because he truly deserves the reconition as one of the best trainers in the game! He is "The Last of the Mochicans"
I too am really pleased that Ricky has chosen Bob. Ricky doesn't need a radical change in technique, tactic or style. In my opinion he lost his last two fights mainly because of the quality of opposition, bottom line they were just too good for him. I think Rickys most important thing in his comeback will be stamina and fitness; the questions will be firstly have the years of abuse (in and out of the ring) caused irrepairable damage, and secondly has the time away put him beyond 'repair'? I think Bob is the man to really put Ricky into shape, and I don't think he'll waste much time changing anything. For as the old saying goes 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it'!:bbb
Exactly, he doesn't need to learn how to box, just someone to get him tip top and ready to go, and bobs the man for the job.
He's not better than Billy Graham! Billy Graham and Ricky Hatton where a double act, they where more than just a Trainer and a fighter. Ricky Hatton will never EVER be the same without Billy Graham, and deep down he is not totally content or happy with being trained by Bob Shannon. He longs for the old days with Billy Graham, why esle would he pick Bob Shannon who originated from the same gym as Billy Graham. "They can come closer, than close, but original they will never be"
Its like Naz n Brendan.........its done and dusted..........and ayes.......am gutted. Bob is sound too.......be chuffed to see him get Hatton charged.....as said......he knows the rest.
Just seems to lack charisma and star quality, that Billy Graham had. Seems like a nice man, but i don't pick up on any star quality. I enjoyed the duo of Billy Graham and Ricky Hatton........ [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mXOXl-R8is[/ame]
Bob Shannon, the guy who likes to put his fighters through army style training camps? Strange move this, Ricky with all his money could snap his fingers & automatically be the no1 at any gym he chooses worldwide, but instead chooses Mayweather snr & now Bob Shannon? The mind boggles:huh
This is interesting, The brother leaves Shannon and now Ricky's with him.. The stuff with the father and the car park as well, Did Matt hear about Shannon taking Ricky on and walk away annoyed with Shannon training his brother. Seems like the family don't want him to fight or at least the father. Shannon is ok, nowt special IMHO. I don't go along with this all he needs is someone to get him fit. That was part of his problem going into later stage of his first career as a fighter. If your mixing at higher end of the sport you need a guy who can devise a gameplan, develop the training plan and mentally keep you in right frame of mind. Not saying Bob can't do that i don't know the man but if Shannon is just going to be used to hold pads and bark orders as Ricky pisses sweat i think Ricky will be once again be found on canvas. To back up my point a little look at Cotto, and the way he's developed and furthered his career under guidance of Steward and Diaz who both saw flaws that were left by his uncle and Santiago. Ricky could do with some technical work IMHO, The lad in his early days was a better fighter then the man that was left in a heap by Pac IMO.
Cotto is an excellent example of how it should be done. Brother Naz seems to get a lot of praise here but perhaps Ricky just wanted to train in Manchester? Ricky is a trainer himself now so probably feels (wrongly) that he's learnt all he can; I'm pretty sure he mentioned something about "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" when referring to himself :think
I've seen Bob Shannon interviews with seckbach the guy is full of himself he calls himself one of the best trainers in boxing and claimed that when matty Hatton beats canelo he will be known around the world as the best.
