What are we to make of Bobby Chacon’s career?

He has some impressive scalps: Danny Lopez, Boza-Edwards, Bazooka Limon and Ruben Oliveras among them.

But he lost to a lot of good fighters; Arguello, Boza, Limon, Oliveras to name a few.

It seemed for most of his career he was always a bridesmaid and never a bride — couldn’t come up big in the big fights or especially in title fights (won a vacant title but lost it pretty quickly after). Then he finally broke through and captured the bigger stage by winning another title and getting wide TV exposure on the winning side.

He was the winner in back-to-back Ring Magazine fights of the year in ‘82 against Limon and ‘83 against Boza. You could argue he’s one of the best action fighters in history.

But how do you rate him? What do you make of his years of hanging with the best but not quite getting over? And what do you figure happened that allowed him to finally break through?
