Chacon has been in some of the most entertaining fights I dare say in history. That aside do you consider Chacon an ATG?
He was a very good fighter, with more skills than he is generally thought to have had. By the end of his career his toughness and courage we're carrying the day and that is how he is remembered. I have a friend that sparred with him for several fights late in Chacon's career. He liked him quite a bit. One of the fights was the Mancini fight. My friend told Chacon he was going to lose: "He's big and you're little." That made Chacon and my friend said Bobby tried to knock him out next time they sparred.
Bobby's my second favorite fighter, but no, I couldn't say he's an ATG. Too inconsistent, too much life in the fast lane.
He is the yin to Sanchez's yang. One determined, highly disciplined professional, one devil-may-care street urchin with so much trauma and drama in his life it could fill two or three feature films. He also happens to be the most exciting fighter I've ever seen. A simultaneously glorious and tragic figure. Endlessly interesting.
Excellent thanku Chacon & Matt Franklin are two of my ATF. Everything and more you could want from fighters.
Chacon was a very good fighter, but usually against the very top of the Division he fell short. 59 7 1 47 k.o./TKO's 80% ko % Initially Chacon was considered a boxer with punching skills, and he wracked up numerous k.o.'s & TKO's early in his career. He halted by TKO Danny Lopez's 23 fight winning streak. Note: His loss to Ruben Olivares in fight #2 was partially due to being "weight drained". 1975-06-20 : Ruben Olivares 125¼ lbs beat Bobby Chacon 124½ lbs by TKO at 2:29 in round 2 of 15 Location: Forum, Inglewood, California, USA Referee: Larry Rozadilla WBC World Featherweight Title Attendance: 18,770 Gate: $421,000 (new California record) "Mexico's Ruben Olivares, a 2-1 underdog, battered a weakened Bobby Chacon into submission in the 2nd round Friday night to capture the WBC featherweight title. Olivares, 125 1/4, had Chacon, 124 1/2, down twice and referee Larry Rozadilla finally stopped the one-sided bout at 2:29 of the 2nd round. Olivares floored Chacon midway in the 2nd round with a left-right combination. Chacon got up, but was pinned in Olivares' corner where the popular veteran then battered him with a steady stream of lefts and rights that finally sent him to the canvas for the second time. Rozadilla stopped the bout with Chacon taking a fierce beating in Olivares corner." United Press International
Not an ATG but he is in contention with Carmen Basilio, Matthew Saad Muhammad and Arturo Gatti as the most exciting made-for-TV fighter ever.
Not an alltime great but very good and exciting. Bobby Chacon came up here to Sacramento late in his career and was sparring with a young prospect that Don Chagrin had in his stable. Day in and day out Chacon kicked Tony Lopez`s ass. The kid kept coming back each day though and eventually started to hold his own. Chacon became some what of a mentor to Lopez who would go on to become a world champion as well. He picked up some of Bobby`s moves along the way.
No, he's on the outside. But I'd rather watch him fight once than many that are in the boxing hall of fame several times.
