This is a cracking fight. Two difficult styles producing a difficult and exhausting war of attrition. Possibly this fight finished Turpin, though it's also one of his better technical performances IMO, just not so good tactically. Here's my scorecard and the fight itself.

    Round 1

Turpin dominates with varied and sharp leads, including uppercuts and right hands to the body and dominates the battle of the jabs. They do meet inside but theres little work there at this stage. Olson seems befuddled. Tuprin's round

    Round 2

Turpin dominates again, throwing brave leads from a very wide stance and showing a cultured left hand. Olsen is made to look foolish a couple of times by Turpins footwork, but he starts to come on a little bit at the end of the round. Turpin round.

    Round 3

Randy is still mixing things up nicely, working both body and head and timing Bobo with a beautiful left hand as he's coming in. There's a little more action on the inside, but Olsen isn't dominating in there. Turpin round.

    Round 4

The pace steps up notably in this round and Turpin is cut in this round. The combination of these two factors results in a subtle but defining shift in the fight's rythm and Olsen out-works Turpin to pick up his first round, inspite of Turpins use of the jab. Olsen's round.

    Round 5

Suddenly, Turpin seems to be waiting a little, trying to counter-punch and it is Olsen who is leading with dramatic punches, and at the back of them the fight is now being fought at close range. They take turns to force each other to the ropes, but this is an Olsen round.

    Round 6

This is the round that best describes the fight IMO. The round is fought at close range. Here, Olsen is the automatic winner for the most part. He doesn't win these stretches wide, but he does win them, with sniping left hands for the most part, but a decent mix of punches. Turpin does well, but not AS well, so he loses these stretches by default. The referee is excellent in my opinion, he was seperating them early because no real work was being done inside, now they are fighting in there, he is attentative, but lets them get on with it. At the end of the round, Olsen bulls Turpin to the ropes and abuses him. Big Olsen round and they are now even on my card, 3-3

    Round 7

Turpin shows a pronounced willingness to go close. Perhaps he thinks he is protecting his cut, or perhaps he has started to tire, but for me this willingness to go inside gives him no chance. He actually dominates in the early stages of this round but Olsen is wearing him throughout, and although they both show good form at the range, Olsen has the better bodywork and is just that little bit more persistent. When Bobo has engineered Turpin to the ropes again, he chases him with brutal headshots, which Turpin tries to ditch with headmovement, with mixed success. Olsen round.

    Round 8

Fascinating round. Turpin leads from mid-range and is then tied up. Olsen appears to want to rest a bit and the consequence is that Turpin has his full wind in the second half of the fight. Turpin hurts him badly with a mix of shots, wild right hand, left hook, right hand to the body. Turpin serves notice on Olsen, letting him know that if he takes his foot of the gas for even one round it'll cost him that round and myabe more. Turpin round and they are even again at four apeice.

    Round 9

So this round seems crucial and Turpin is doing very well early - before Olsen shepards him to the ropes once again. Here he lets hard shots go to the head and Turpin is trying to ditch them but gets clipped. Bobo has built up a real head of steam and traps him once more, before dropping him right at the bell with a surprise right hand out of that horrible crouch. Big Olsen round.

    Round 10

Olsen comes out pretty cagey, still respectful, but he has looked for another gear since losing round 8 and is pressing his man. He's not just jabbing and looking for the inside now, rather he's throwing punches behind the jab. Turpin gets dropped hard once again, at the ropes, and looks hurt, up at nine. Olsen closes and Turpin deploys every trick he knows to survive, slippind and ducking and firing shots to the body. He tries to hide from the big punches on the inside, so Olsen goes back to work in there like the pro his is. He turns bully now, handling Turpin a bit and looking for big big punches. Turpin does really well to survive the round. Big Olsen round.

    Round 11

Turpin shows his bravery here, and probably dominates for a stretch. His problem is he no longer has the strength to resist Olsen's push, so his default status is on the ropes where he gets hit up. Olsen hurts him again on the ropes for his third big round in a row.

    Round 12

The fight is following a depressing pattern now, with Turpin seeming able and capable but just too tired and hurt to keep Bobo off him. It's still fascinating viewing though, as we watch him try to survive and it's genuinely thrilling to see him fire back with both hands upon being hurt a peach of a right. But another Olsen round to leave Turpin needing a KO on my card (8-4)

    Round 13

In this round, Olsen shows just what a horrible fighter he is to face. Turpin is doing well with the jab and is probably leading in this round until the last five seconds where Olsen hurts him badly and it looks momentarily like he might go. Olsen is persistent with a consistant workrate, impossible to discourage and because of his leading head and the position he likes to take up, his punches are often disguised once he gets into you. You could make a case for Turpin winning this round, but I just can't do it given how the two men end up.

    Round 14

A bit of a nothing round that Turpin probably manages to shade. He's looking a big ragged now, whilst Olsen is still looking organised in his own fashion. Still, Turpin's punches are the sharper here. Round Turpin.

    Round 15

Turpin begins the round savagely, throwing violent punches from a distance, looking for the KO. Olsen gets inside and starts that horrible nibblng. Turpin has success with lead rights whilst Olsen has great success on the ropes. I couldn't seperate them in this round.

So I have it 9-5 to Olsen, which was a scorecard that surprised me. I always thought it looked closer than two of the official scoreacards had it, if anything I liked the 8-7 card best, but it's actually pretty hard to score many of these rounds to Turpin. A fascinating clash of styles though. Anyway, here is the fight itself:

........Dave Sands should have been fighting that night. He'd have whipped both men with little effort.

    turpin ko sands, no problem.
seriously, turpin should have beaten olsen, had hardly trained, sparred very little and gambled on stopping olsen quickly which he nearly did.
turpin let emotions rule his head and wasn't at the fight at all.
a peak turpin would ko olsen.don't know about sands though !!
