Watching live it really looked to me like Canelo was bossing the fight and hurting GGG and I thought he won 6-4 with two rounds even. Watching the fight back again, pausing and reviewing exchanges I had GGG the clear winner. In the post fight interview, discussing rounds 2-5 Kellerman said it looked like Canelo would get the stoppage, even Bunce said he was worried for GGG in his post fight analysis, but watching back I had GGG winning those rounds 3-1. I think body language and reaction to shots plays a big part in perception of the fight live, and Canelo, with his compact style just looks more solid compared to GGG who got caught off balance a few times and generally looked a bit more ragged. When GGG got caught flush it was more noticeable than when Canelo leaked shots. I'll caveat all this by saying that I do think Canelo hurt GGG to the body early and throughout the fight, and was definitely stronger. I also think Canelo felt in control and could have stepped it up if he really needed to. So in short, I think GGG won the boxing match, but Canelo won the fight. No desire to see a rematch, Canelo takes it convincingly.
First I had it as a draw, but I watched it back and at least 116-112 for Golovkin. Wasn’t easy to judge in Live, but if you watch it properly you can see Golovkin clearly winning the rounds with his jab.
Initially watched it with a beer and came out with what I thought was 116-112 to Golovkin in a very close fight. Sober the next morning, re watched it and had it 116-112 to GGG, the only difference being I thought thus was competitive but clear for Golovkin and after rematching it I think their first fight was closer.
I didn't score it watching but felt GGG was ahead 1-2 rounds. I'll watch it without listening to the biased HBO crew next time and score. GGG did look tired at times but never looked hurt. Canelo didn't really look tired until the last maybe 4-5 rounds but he did look visibly shaken and hurt at times to a point where atleast twice I thought he may go down. Going forward bit doesn't make a difference to me. All canelo did was fought the way he should have in first fight. But its funny, he runs the first fight basically and gets all the credit in the world this fight for not running and slowly coming forward (but he didn't make GGG run, GGG stayed within range the whole time). It wouldn't have been an issue or story had Canelo done that the first fight. But regardless, GGG still threw more and landed more BOTH times. So both fights GGG outworked Canelo. But GGG didn't get credit for making canelo run for the first time in his career and didn't get credit for outworking th eyounger fighter in both fights. But canelo of course gets the credit. Also, the amount of times I saw Canelo's head snap back compared to GGGs was nearly double. I was surprised with the visible damage to GGGs face, unless he just bruises a lot easier. But that was a bit strange to me. I think GGG knew he wasn't getting the decision and was really disappointed he couldn't KO him. But I said It months ago and many others said it, GGG was never gonna win a decision in the rematch.
That's exactly how I saw it and feel. Like you said it shocks you when the killer becomes the hunter. I did have Golovkin winning the fight but I felt Canelo was hurting him quite badly to the body and was slowing him down. I had Golovkin running away with it down the stretch when I watched it live too. I watched it again the day after and what surprised me is I didn't see this Canelo domination in the early rounds. Don't get me wrong the body shots got his respect but watching it back the second time he never looked in danger of dropping to his knees. Golovkin won the first and won a few more of the early rounds, he was snapping Canelo's head back like crazy with the jab. Canelo was landing the occasional eye catching shot but Golovkin was making him miss a hell of a lot as well. Golovkin also landed the best shot of the night and hurt Canelo in the 10th, the way he closed out the fight left me in no doubt who was the winner. The result stinks, to take away the belts from the champion like that is not fair at all.
That's my point, when Canelo was hurt it was harder to notice watching live as he is a lot more solid and compact whereas when GGG felt it a couple of times, he kind of stepped back and gasped for air. GGG took a lot of accurate power shots to the head that's why he was more marked up, and he took those shots because he felt the body work early on and dropped his defence.
