Hi Mates, I have been boxing for some 3 months now. Sparring almost everyday. 5-6 days a week. I feel great and I'm loving every moment of it. My questions is, While Sparring, I'm have a orthodox stands, when I have a jab thrown at me, I usually move my body along with head to my left followed by a immediate jab. That way my jab lands, mostly. However, my fellow mates tell me that I move my body too much and I'm asked to just move my head. When I just move my head, any jab intended to hit my middle face hits my ears or side of my face. In short, head movement doesn't work fully for me. But body movement dose. What should I do? Should I continue moving my body? Much Thanks guys!!
Well, first off, what do you mean by just moving your head? Because the head itself doesn't really ever swivel from the neck in a different direction; head movement is the body putting the head in a different position. Second, conventionally, you want to slip on the outside, and move your head to the right from an orthodox jab, being an orthodox fighter yourself. If it's a move you've mastered, then keep using it, and if there's something wrong with it, ask for more details or film it and see what's up with it. If you slip on the inside, you have to follow it up with certain defensive precautions or offensive preparations which come with instinct; your body is more capable of escaping a follow-up right if it's moving from the right to left outside, instead of possibly being caught set up for a 2 after the 1 on the left (if you don't get what I mean by this, let me know, I'll try to explain it better.) You're also in better position to counter by pivoting the opposite way from the outside after you shift your weight to slip. Basically, practice just slipping a punch by doing drills on mitts or glove-less with a partner to avoid overcompensating, and try to ask for more details or get footage of this specific habit so you can isolate what's good or bad about it.
Thanks for the response guys.. I asked one of the senior guy to watch me spar. Later on I asked if what I'm doing is either wrong or awful to look at. He said that I'm doing bobbing but moving my legs too much close/inside to my sparring mate to make reach my jab. He said its Okay for now and with practice I may look better and it would become very handy if I master it.. @Bogotazo, you got it correct. I meant to say, body along with the head. And when i said body movement I actually meant my whole body including my legs.. Much thanks guys.. I was watching this klitschko-haye match and I really loved the way how Haye managed to miss many punches.. Though I hate that guys as a person
