I'm a hundred miles away from being an active fighter these days, but this has just popped into my head so I thought I should ask some people in the know. As much as you do your best to avoid them, you are going to get hit with a good body shot once in a while. They really break your will. Whats the best way to minimise their impact (I'm not talking about avoiding one, Im assuming one is about to hit you regardless of your best intentions). More work on the medicine ball? Carrying a bit extra weight? Is there a genuine recipe for success?
a medicine ball won't help. obviously it won't do anything to help your floating rib and any ammount of sit-ups does nothing either.i managed to block a few with my elbows when i boxed but as you say, some are going to get through. wearing a foul protector up to your throat like some americans do might help. your piece about breaking your will is spot on:good:good
its the right way to do it, rolling it is fine but RDJs way is better i do alot of medicine ball work where i get hit with it to strengthen my abs and it does help, i also do alot of situps and oblique and twisting sit ups and they do help. My abs are rock solid (im not boasting). Taking body punches is the best training for it though
We mean the same I was struggling with the language. You move in the same direction the punch is going, I'm not suggesting moving towards it. Move with it and brace for impact.
That's like throwing your face in the same direction as a punch..... all that would be doing is making the punch hurt that much more.
im normally a taller fighter so smothering is a good form of defence for me with a body shot i breath out and walk through it and tie them up
situps/crunches are for strengthening and hardening your abdomen. The harder the punch the harder the the impact zone needs to be. Medicine balls are, when used correctly, great for testing and strengthening weaker abs.
This might sounds a bit weird but seeing the punch coming helps. The hardest/best/most effective punch in boxing is the one you dont see coming. A 2 year old could knock out a heavyweight if they never saw it coming and it lands in the sweet spot either to body or head.
Look at Bernards KO of De La Hoya. It wasnt a loaded punch by any means but look at Oscars head/position, he completely turned away from it and put his head down. When Bernard left landed it would have shocked his system. People argue that KO sometimes but i dont doubt it one bit.
Tense on impact..... Lots of sit ups. Good arm positioning to minimise impact. Isometric excercises presumably would be suitable to strengthen abs.... Experts please confirm.
