RJJ has a **** jaw, but he was a great body puncher and could take body shots all day long and laugh at them...
Have you forgotten how Ali kept urging Chuvalo to hit him harder and harder downstairs during their first bout, opening his body right up for George to whack away at in a clinch? Muhammad didn't seem to mind giving away those shots. Yes, he'd wind up peeing blood afterward, but seemed to enjoy psyching guys out who whaled away at his torso in futility. Marciano took and received substantial body shots in the first Walcott fight, but the top guys in that era were merely tough, period. Charles produced knockouts with his body shots, and could withstand them well also. Max Baer wasn't bothered by them (clowning his way through some by Galento). It's a sweeping statement. Wilfredo Gomez was a great body puncher who was adept at picking off body shots himself. But he prevailed in the pocket Manila against Pintor, in part by outlasting Lupe's technically correct hook to the ribs. Jimmy Young, while not a powerful puncher, was nonetheless a dedicated body puncher who had no apparent difficulties himself taking body shots from the likes of Cooney. This isn't akin to Futch's maxim for screwing up a great jabber with a jab of your own. Some body punchers can dish it out but not take it, while others certainly can.
Sometimes I think Ali didn't know those were scoring blows. And sometimes I think the judges didn't know it either. Senor Pepe', got my back? Don't you worry, it's not keeping me up at night. I just dislike the bombardment of negativity I know fighters I like will be met with. I dread it for them. But that they are often earning millions of dollars while I am stuck in consumer wars about my cable bill, it's not that intense and I'll get over it. :blood So, I'm still mostly cool. Also, are you pissed right now? I'm just curious.
