Just watching some old favourite fights over the last couple of days and it got me thinking about Body Punchers. Some of the fights I have been watching were Ward, Gatti, Barrera who are all renowned in the art of going to the body so I thought I'd do a quick list of my favourites. No specific order, just guy's absolutely in tune with being able to damage their opponent with it, or in some cases - 'stop the fight' as they say! Open for debate and throw in anyone I've missed. Mickey Ward (The best) Barrera Cotto Gatti Jose Luis Castillo Hatton 'Boom Boom' Mancini Hussein brothers - Nedal and Hussein Sorry guy's, late addition I completely forgot about until after I posted - Marquez brothers - Juan and Rafael Both very adapt in the art of the body work.
How about that left rip Cotto landed on Foreman...ouch....even though Foreman was out it still was a great signature shot for Cotto over the years....hes still got it :good
I'm a big fan of a quality body puncher. A lot of the reason why Cotto is my fav right now and Skinny was my fav aussie fighter for years. Our Barry had an excellent left to the body aswell. Some of my favorite body punchers to watch include: Luis Manuel Rodriguez Chavez Duran Myung-Woo Yuh Mike McCallum Johnny Tapia Jose Torres Carlos Palomino Even the G-Man Tons of them...a bit of a forgetten art these days but its still around and there are some excellent practitioners.
Body punching is somewhat a bit of a lost art in boxing at times these days...hence why like WhataRock i always enjoyed following Cotto from the early days. Always enjoy watching old Chavez & Duran matches for these reasons also.
I believe a good body puncher can take out Mayweather, he always rolls and leaves himself open for a right to the body, Mosley was even doing it well till he gassed.
Guillermo Ridondeaux.. He is known about his crazy bodypunches. I would say he is the hardest P4P bodypuncher. There is a one example to you: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0ZhYVioIkI[/ame]
Body punching is definitely a lost art. Fighters today head hunt far too much because they can't mix offense and defense that well, therefore they can't effectively go to the body without making themselves vulnerable and opening themselves up as it takes more risk and commitment. This loss of great body punching has meant fighters not knowing how to work for a stoppage. Some of the best body punchers in recent years are; Bennie Briscoe Micky Ward Mike McCallum Gerald McClellan JC Chavez Alexis Arguello Jeff Fenech Eusebio Pedroza James Toney
I agree with this Rock and he was very close to making my list. As was Fenech, but I felt they both wore you down with multiple shots and work, not the one-off's that could really drop you. Both were brilliant at the art due to work rate. Lenny Zapp's on Tommy Browne was also a superb shot, but 'one swallow, doesn't make a nest' yet with his career. Lenny's money shot seem's to be the overhand right.
Great call DBerry and he nearly made my list. I probably have him under the same category as Barry Michael and Jeff Fenech - volume of work there as oppossed to the one-out, drop you to your knees punch. A great fighter in his day was our Lester.
In saying that.. Harding's body work in the 'Andries I' stole the fight. Shannan Taylor is another who's body attack worked wonders. If he didn't drop them with a rip, they'd be open to a hook/right hand anyway.
Quality! :good Nedal 'Skinny' Hussein with his wide, loping body shots. Hussein 'Hussy' Hussein with his short range, often double-up body shots. Two great exponents of the body punch art. Enjoy! :good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLeNYhgAxO0[/ame]
What a great vid..Two excellent fighters who would have beaten a lot of the shittier titlists that came around their time and since..but alas they just werent good enough for the guys that did get shots against.
